you probably didn't get that reference. because if you don't know what 4chan is, you really can't know much about the internet.

I'm sorry people were rude to you, especially because you're a woman. The world needs more female music producers.

Youtube is a very good source for music production tutorials.

Studying music technology formally is a good idea. Berklee will have some free online courses starting next year.

9gag hasn't even been around long enough to originate this.

">" tags the text you're about to type as the color green on 4chan, hence the name GREEN TEXT.

I think this thread has scared her off. You wonder why there aren't many female producers? Because the current production culture is full of 17 year old 'l33t bedroom producers' that can't handle the idea of someone with boobies and long hair doing something they like... ever noticed how 99% of the male population reacts to female gamers?

It's both amusing and depressing to be aware of just how predictably moronic my gender can be... This thread being testament to a complete derail into what 'green text' is, spotted intermittently with allusions to the notability of the OPs gender... :i:

Oh my you're such a gentleman. IMO, there is nothing in this thread that cant be found in any other. Not sure what her gender had to do with anything. The only thing I would say is that when aspiring producers of any gender ask naive questions, dont go over their head so fast with talk of compression, limiting etc. Newbies just need to know what DAW to get and where to find samples etc. They should probably get their feet wet first before jumping on the forums and wanting a walkthrough. Specific questions are much easier to answer pointedly innit?

Much luv to my fellow bass addicts! :w:

This is actually a serious point of discussion in "the biz" and lots of people have speculated as to why there aren't more female producers. Cultural bias usually comes up as the main culprit - women being discouraged from acquiring technical/engineering mentalities but boys being given the full push in that direction. I don't buy that though. Others have actually brought up the fact that biology comes into play later in life in the form of pressure to have a family taking priority, but that still doesn't explain why teenage girls don't get into music production the same way that teen boys do. There are some recent notable exceptions - Alicia Keys' engineer comes to mind, and then of course the handful of celebrated ladies in our scene (Ikonika et. al.) - but it's still kind of weird.

-q-

That being said, the fact of the matter is that music production "culture" is NOT inherently the same as a young male worldview; rather, it's the fact that, for whatever reason, mainly dudes get into this stuff AND THEN they bring adolescent boy humor with them, not the other way 'round.

And hopefully the OP actually wants to make music instead of wanting to just be known as a producer (aka the "look at me, I'm wearing a black turtleneck and beret! I'm an artist! Never actually painted anything tho" syndrome.)

I was allowed to have a thread like that before it got locked. I learned a lot from the replies and it got locked in less than 24hrs I believe. I bet the OP DID look at other threads, but also bet he learned things from this one. There are things I'll learn from other threads, but there are no doubt things I'll never learn, and things that I won't learn until much later because mine didn't continue.
