Fucking this. You can't make exceptions when it comes human rights. You start doing that and you kinda start throwing the whole freedom thing out the window even more.

There's nothing wrong with free speech, and these people are perfectly entitled to their opinion. But hijacking an event which is completely unconnected with their beliefs to gain attention to their cause is wrong, especially considering that the platform they get to air their opinion is larger than most other groups.

I totally agree with everything garethom said.
There once was a time when if you had an opinion that black folk could have the same rights as white folk you could have been arrested.
Just remember that.

You can't legally recognise anybody as a 'hate' mob, that is just making someone's opinion illegal.

Why can't they just make it illegal for anyone to picket at certain places with high emotion.. I.e funerals, murder scenes etc.

Funerals are usually held on private property, so if they trespass they are gone. If they can be heard in the distance, than so be it, the price we all have to bear to live in a free society. I was at a funeral a couple of weeks ago, the somber heaviness of a funeral is fresh in my heart and mind, it is not an abstraction for me, still, must allow the speech.

And as with a lot of things, the media is the one that should receive the finger wagging. It is their irresponsible coverage that inspires Newtons and WBC alike. They are supposed to be responsible, civic minded journalists.

A lot of people don't know that Fred Phelps is a lawyer. During the Civil Rights movement he took on a lot of cases for black people when other white lawyers would not. The whole God Hates cigarettes thing started when Phelps wanted to keep the gay prostitutes out of a local park, but they were way more low key then. They were picketing for changed local legislation to say you couldn't be in a park past a certain time, etc. Over the years it's escalated to the point it is now.

My theory still is that it's a money making scheme for the main family. They picket, they get their "rights" infringed upon, they sue, they win lots of money.

That being said, if my son was one of the children in Sandy Hook and the WBC showed up at the funeral... I'd probably do something stupid. Is that the "correct" response? No, but someone needs to stop them if the legal system won't.

Of all the immoral actions, praising the death of 20 children and referring to it as "the glory of god's judgement" is among the top five worst committed, in my book. But of course, it must be tolerated to preserve alleged 'freedom' in this country. I wish the law provided us the freedom of beating the shit out of these maniacal, twisted, malintented, demonic assholes. And if this country exercised true freedom, the law wouldn't event attempt to constrain the actions of the people.

My question: Why haven't we, as individuals aggravated by WBC, returned the favor and displayed massive protests at their events? Surely such an event is allowed by law, considering the law hasn't interfered with WBC's practices.
