Music radar has free sample packs for days as well.
Also Bedroom producers blog if it hasn't been mentioned is worth a look.
Then of course sampling, recording your own.

I bought the essentials, some nice kicks and hats, snares and claps were terrible though. Care to recommend me a bigger sample pack in the same style? Btw, that 90's one you sent me has some nice bass sounds, so fucking raw.

Thinking of buying High Rankins Ultimate Drumstep, Dubstep 2 and Zenheiser big room kicks off Loopmasters. Are these good buys? Also I've heard good things about Vengeance but heard everyone has them? Sorry I'm new to all of this so if any can help that would be great. I'm mainly looking for decent drum hits :)

buy the oneshots from the blokhe4d samplepack, those are really good in my experience!

You need to learn what constitutes a decent drum hit in the first place: for example, lots of people use the Vengeance hits but there are many who'd say they're godawful because they're already super "wet" (heavily processed, mainly compression.) This means that on their own outside the context of a song they sound hella lound and bangin', but getting it to sit nicely in your mix without further squashing the hell out of everything else is a problem. Further, if everyone else is already using those sounds... yeah.

It also depends on what you're trying to do musically, but that's another tangent.

Buying drums if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, though, might not be the best place to start. FWIW. :Q:

I take it oneshots will just be drum samples? no loops just the hits?

Grab some free packs first to see what sort of things you like before investing. Goldbaby has a free section on their website, and Computer Music magazine has free samples on their DVD every month.

some of the packs up there are good for layering and you can layer your own drums.
