Narrow as it may be, that's all it means to me; be more Christ like.scspkr99 wrote:That's a pretty narrow definition of religious. I also don't know it works as a definition when it ignores other religions. State it clearer and maybe.Leave Blank wrote: I mean it in the biblical sense.
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. (James 1:26-7)
I see Catholicism's religion to be echoed in Matthew 23:27-28
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Is anyone on here 'deeply' religious?

Yeah I saw that, so what is religion in the false sense of the word? in the context you used the first time where you said you weren't religious.

I think it's usually the audience that confirms whether you made something clear.Leave Blank wrote:Legalism, I'm almost certain I made that clear.Terpit wrote:Yeah I saw that, so what is religion in the false sense of the word? in the context you used the first time where you said you weren't religious.
So you think that Christianity is the only valid religion then?

Re: Is anyone on here 'deeply' religious?
edit: According to your definition, a muslim/buddhist/hindu/etc cannot be religious, since they are not trying to be more christ-like. Do you seriously believe that? Or do you not need to follow christ to be christ-like?Leave Blank wrote: Narrow as it may be, that's all it means to me; be more Christ like.

Re: Is anyone on here 'deeply' religious?
never mind, this is apparently the definition:
le·gal·ism
/ˈlēgəˌlizəm/
Noun
Excessive adherence to law or formula.
Dependence on moral law rather than on personal religious faith
So it sounds to me like a legalist (?) follows a religion but gets to pick and choose which rules he/she follows, pretty convenient

Re: Is anyone on here 'deeply' religious?
Never understood why this is used against religious people. Surely it makes sense to "pick and choose" what you follow and believe, isn't that what rational thinking is all about? Would you guys really prefer it if all religious people strictly followed the Bible/Koran/Mahabharata/etc NO MATTER WHAT? The most religious people I've met (in my understanding of the term, i.e., love and respect for God/the universe/each other) tend to be the ones who have thought about it the most, neither dismissing or accepting anything offhand.Terpit wrote:never mind, this is apparently the definition:

I think Kochari is spot on. A legalist is simply a rational, religious person.
