So is the point of these schools ICON, Dubspot etc to give people the skills to get into the recording industry or to make dance music? Because even paying 5K for something like that seems...I'd spend the money on my studio...fuck...5k would get someone a pretty sweet setup!

Right? A couple years dicking around with 5 grand worth of gear would get me so much farther.

With $15k you can build a studio.

For me personally, I know I would too...but that's hindsight bias because I got a lot of dicking around with 500 bucks worth of gear for a couple years.
@Wub: Yea, I know ICON is 15 : ) , I'm just saying even 5k seems like a lot to me for stuff you can get for free on the internet. But as you said if you aren't going for the info, but the connections it might be a different story.
I mean...when I started all this like 7 years ago I did think I'd be sitting here working on a Creative Commons project with someone that lives on the other side of the country from me and we'd be getting reviewed by netlabelism.org ..invested about 100 dollars in getting the CC project up and running and haven't even spent that budget yet!
I probably spent 5K on my studio over the years and got all my learning online, I'm pretty happy with my tunes these days.
Having gone to studio art program that I didn't pay for and getting what I got out of it, I can't imagine PAYING to go to one. There was a lot of talk about the degree = career and it was suuuuuccchhhh bullshit.
To each their own though, I've always been more of a DIY, homecooked kinda guy.

Oh my fuck this is so ridiculous.
What's the point of making connections if you're still a damn noob? Buy a load of dope gear and get an internship at a studio. That way you can watch pros actually do the work they get paid for, instead of listening to some turd talk about what techniques would have gotten him famous had he not landed this sweet job at recording school. It's not like you're not gonna have to be a teaboy regardless. Might as well start sooner and spend your 15k on something useful.

One of the problems here in California is that your not allowed to intern at a studio unless youre earning college credit for it toward a similar program like the ones offered by these schools. Some legal issue or some shit (think its because you cant have un-payed/un-reimbursed interns?). I know this because ive contacted multiple studios and heard the same thing over and over again. Im mentioning california because thats where the op said he would be going to school. I have no idea how it is in other states.
Most people cant afford $15k (or the $90k for the schools here in the bay area) and have to rely on learning the knowledge first hand from someone in a studio, the old fashioned way, but you cant get that out here unless youre going to school to get that knowledge already anyway.
Overall is a good scam they have going.

I'll teach you how to make sick wubz for fifty dollars.
And yea, I've heard about laws that require interns to be paid for their time. Dunno why that would limit them to getting only interns from degree/certificate programs...maybe they pay their tuition or something...
But I know there was a big stink about that around the time friends of mine were looking for internships when I was an undergraduate...

Why wouldn't they just frame it as a course that costs the same amount per hour as minimum wage?

Haha. That is brilliant. That sounds like something a university in the US would do...
