There's a big cultural difference between ignorant teens waving glow sticks at Guetta and the average club night
with decent music.
I usually don't use the term rave, but I've also been to fairly commercialized parties/raves and from that perspective I can
get where you're coming from. Point is, 'rave culture' has made it to the mainstream.. so you can take from it what you like
and leave most of it.
Average night I go to is full of users, but there's always a good vibe. I think because there's enough people coming for the music and the organization is out to put up a fun night with good music/other cultural content.

Raves are all about the diverse crowds of people from all walks of life (including 'shitty schools') and drugs. Gotta have rudeboys at a rave! Scenes that loose that quickly become very watered-down and dull.
If you want to be at places full of employed 20 somethings having intellectual conversations and not taking drugs then you should probably hang about pretencious coffee shops. Or bars playing jazzy house.

here underground raves are 4 buttfucks that know each other from school shouting inside jokes on a mic & playing off vdj until the headliner comes on
commercial raves are buttfucks that dont know one another overpaying for shit & bouncing around w/ no clue
i just show up to places 3 hours late so i can catch the dj i want to see & get the fuck out

I don't get how this can be though. So if it's a night with good music the general ambiance and crowd still sucks?

many times the crowds will just show up to support the local shit djs
when i saw joe nice the floor was cleared by the time he got on
similar story for traxman last weekend
there are some nights w/ a cool crowd but most of the time they suck
getting better tho i think

Rave culture made it to the mainstream 20 years ago when people were able to charge £20 to stand in a field in East fucking Ham.

theres so many kinds of 'rave culture' i dislike
i don't like fucked up fulltime ravers who have serious drug problems but live in close circles of like-minded people supporting each other's habits, whenever i'm at a rave with those people i feel down because (especially at psytrance raves in my hometown) you can't help but notice how sad they are unless you're on drugs yourself.
i don't like people who are obviously only there so they can tell their friends about it afterwards, or even better tweeting from the dancefloor, making photos with their shitty phone cameras and standing around in groups on the dancefloor with everyone staring at you if you bump into one of them
i hate drunk people not respecting private space and generally being obnoxious
i don't really like drug dealers at raves. especially the hungry ones, i've had a lot of people pestering me to buy their badly cut shit suddenly leaving me alone after i gave them an apple or whatever food i might have with me.
i don't like dj's who think they're the shit for managing to crossfade a couple tunes on fucking traktor. either hyping themselves like fricking rockstars or ignoring the crowd entirely, the smug stnuc. i swear i can dj better than most warm up acts but i still don't do it cause i'd be ashamed to play random synced tunes to a room full of people without putting a little thought in or having SERIOUS improvisation skills.
i hate bad soundsystems at clubs. hate when the bass turns into a muddy mess that drowns out the rest of the music, hate when the highs are earsplitting, hate when those weird overdriven artifacts pop up that i only ever hear on club speakers being pushed over their limits. especially apparent in those tech house clav sounds that turn into a siren-like howling that makes me fear for my sense of hearing every time.
oh and fuck people round here picking up that "kandi" stuff, i don't even know where to start with that

+ queues, prices, travel, smells, comedowns, hangovers
But it's all more than worth it for the times everything comes together and you properly 'av it!
