Think console gaming is dying tbh. Focus seems to shift to tablet games for the casuals and PC gaming for the more commited. Hence all the recent focus on TV and entertainment capabilities, even from Nintendo.

tldr, but I can guess that it's just PS fans bashing microsoft to feel superior?
I'm done with video games but checked the announcement because I was curious, I'm a xbox fan but I don't care about Kinect and all that stuff, so I was kinda disappointed... The new exclusive relationships sound interesting though

Every thing this does I have been doing for a few years with a HTPC running windows 7 with media center and steam, the only thing it has over a PC is game exclusivity and a lower price-point but then you lose the expandability and customisation of a PC and have to deal with DRM and subscriptions.

Nothing's shifting to PC gaming, that died 10 years ago apart from a few hardcores. If consoles die its because 99% of people would rather play angry birds than a proper game

This isn't a MS vs Sony thing either. This whole connect to online once a day and fee for using a game on more than one console is further nickel & diming, and poor business practice (although I would love to see companies like Gamestop that thrive on the second hand market with poor business practices and shitty treatment of their customers and employees go out of business).
MS already charges to use their online, and something tells me that these new television features they're included are going to cost a premium as well.
None of these next gen consoles have any games to sell them, including the Wii-U which has been out for awhile. They've put this focus on being PC lite application wise and entertainment hubs, yet seem to have lost the focus on gaming.
It's going to be interesting with this "nothing shifting to PC gaming" when the Steam box comes out, especially if it's modular as far as parts.
With how cheap games are via the service and the constant sales I think people previously intimidated with setting up a PC in the living room will be making the shift, not to mention Valve is way ahead when it comes to cloud computing and distribution networks.

I can honestly say I don't even care what the fuck these things do nowadays.

If I want to play counter-strike, I get a PC. If I want to play Street Fightaah fooow I grab a 360.
The partial shift to passive media is beyond me aswel.

Sony and MS should rebrand their consoles as home theater multimedia systems.

Nintendo should become strictly a game developer for PCs for the next cycle and create add-ons/controllers to make gaming more immersive. PCs are integrating themselves into the central hub of our homes anyway.

As a playstation fanboy since the ps1, i have never owned an xbox or ever will. How can a games console primarily concentrate on tv (who even watches tv anymore?)and hand gestures with kinect lol I can see why xbox users are frustrated with Microsoft.

Feels like console gaming is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator with every feature. I don't want a magic fucking super entertainment hub, I just want to play games. On a console. Which is what consoles are for.

microsoft and sony make consoles that are suposed to last ten years and nintendo makes consoles that are suposed to last for five years. nintendos 7th console will bring consoles back to life and it will be there last console. thats why im taking the nintendo rought witch im 50 50 on what i just said and ill probably buy a steam box and not be as much of a fan boy.

I don't really give a shit about these details. Retailers are essentially selling the same game over and over at near retail prices these days with the second-hand market - and publishers don't see cent one. M$ were pressured to address the issue and they've tried to develop a system where whatever happens, you can only place your scorn on the publishers.

I'm more concerned about the vast amount of data M$ can collect from me (including some potential big brother type shit with always on kinect) and double-dipping by reselling it to advertisers.
