So people in one culture experience an unexplainable phenomenon that they explain through cultural upbringing and people in a different culture explain them using their own respective culture's upbringing?

So ghosts are real because a different culture would use different examples to explain something they don't grasp?

i never said they are real because anything. Just pointing out that it's interesting when different cultures have varied accounts about certain phenomenom , notably near death expeirences and out of body experiences but there are often commonly occurring themes and sometimes very specific similarities between them all. Sure you can reduce it all down to neurotic influences but that could be falling short of what's happening in some cases. That was more a side point and not a "Ghosts are real because ' statement.

Spirits are a pretty normal thing for certain cultures and practices. The astral plane and ayawaska are the key examples i usually like referring to because these are things anyone can check out for themselves (responsibly after research ) ,or at least look at Aya inspired Art and read the accounts from people to get a jist on whether or not every single person is simply imagining the same characterrs each time. Not saying every instance of a ghost/spirit is real, because sometimes they can be projections of the self, but in some cases, you can be dealing with something objectively separate from your own conciousness.

Essentially it all boils down to whether or not you view Conciousness as a by product of the physical brain and nothing more, or if you think that conciousness has a potentially self-dependent nature that does not need a physical body to exist.

i always say i wont reply and then i do :i:

I've posted this story before, can't remember the thread.. but anyway:

Me and two friends were riding in a car on our way to pick up a third. Middle of the afternoon, sunny out. We were on a sort of curvy road that's a popular route off a major expressway but it's not a big road, just regular one lane in either direction. It has a big state park kinda thing on the right with a chain link fence and lots of trees/wooded area along the border. So it's like road, a few yards of grass, a chain link fence, and right behind the fence is some woods. It's a low traffic time of day only a few cars headed either direction.

Now the next few things happen over a matter of five seconds -- We head around the bend of one of these curves in the road and I instantly notice something's presence on the right of our car. It's humanoid, for sure but very hard to focus on. Composed entirely of the blackest black i've ever seen. Like as though it were a cutout of this dimension in the shape of a creature, but within it's own outline is absolute nothingness. It's limping/lurching heavily to one side, as though it had a badly injured leg, along the right side of the road where the grass meets the road. It looks very short to me, like 4 and a half feet maybe. It also looks remarkably two-dimensional. Like as we pass by it it's form seems to disappear and reappear into our plane like it were a paper cut-out of a person, but deep dark black (like i said before). It's like it's rippling in and out of this spacial dimension. as our car rolls past, i'm watching this thing seem to lurch closer and closer to the middle of the street. It's almost close enough as we pass that we would have ran it down with the car. I spin my head around as we drive past immediately to get a view of wtf I just saw, and I've never felt anything like this, but.. it's like trying to look at it was painful. It felt like the creature and my eyes were magnetized with the same polarity so it was pushing my eyeballs away from it. Best way i can describe it. but I tried my absolute hardest to lock my eyes on the thing, and as I'm watching it just slinks into one of the shadows of the trees and disappears into the shadows right before my eyes.

I say nothing as I turn around, and at first there's a stagnant silence in the car. I didn't believe my own eyes at first, and debated even mentioning it. about 5 seconds later, just as I go to open my mouth and say something, the driver exclaims: "Ok, I'm turning this car around and if we don't see somebody or something on the side of the road back there, we're going to have a serious problem." We all then voice our agreement and turn the car around as each of us begins describing our account of what the fuck we just saw. Both the driver and the other witness describe it as massive, like 7.5 feet tall, and the driver explains that he barely noticed at first but as we rolled past he genuinely feared that he had ran someone down. That's how close to the car it looked to him. He and the other guy are both sure that it was dangerously close to the vehicle, like we ought to have side swiped it at the least. I, however, maintain that it looked extremely short, and closer to the side of the road, though it was lurching out toward the car and got alarmingly close. We all agreed about its limping way of movement.

We are headed down the road scanning the side by the trees as best we can and see nothing. I'm describing how I believe i saw it disappear into the shadows.

The other two considered the possibility they saw some prankster or silly person in a crazy black yeti costume or something, and maybe they jumped the fence into the park. But none of us really felt it was that. I emphasized it's 2-dimensional properties, and variance in height, the lurching, and the feeling of trying to look at it when i turned my head to view its disappearance. The other two guys concur that as it passed us, they hardly noticed it but definitely SAW it, and no one said a thing until we all needed someone to confirm we actually saw something at all.

during those few seconds after it happened, we all felt the dark anger of the creature, as though it were seriously pissed that it had been seen.

From then on, I had no choice but to believe in other spacial dimensions at the least, and the existence of life in those dimensions, dark energy, good/evil, and it appears that this fallen demon had made a mistake, found itself rippling into our space, and pretty much right into our car.

The driver still swears he drove right into it. The other guy insists it was almost 8 ft .tall and looked like a hairy black yehti. I still can't say it looked like anything but the short outline of a creature filled with the blackest pool of black I've ever seen. It all happened swiftly and felt liek the kind of thing you see in your peripheral, even though i consciously tried to look right at it.

We don't even like talking about it cus it's too real. but i feel like i ought to share the story. every time i do, i feel a sense of this demon out there somewhere, growing angry that we caught a glimpse of its world, and revealed it to others.

You saw an animal and the sun reflecting on the road was creating a glare that was fucking with your view of it, it creeped you out but your imagination has run away with you, hence all three perspectives claiming a different thing.
There are no such things as demons and even if there were, what was it doing on road.
Can I ask, are you religious in any way?

not religious. never believed in anything paranormal until this happened. The only discrepancy in all our accounts was the height and positioning of the thing. Everyone "kind of" saw it but definitely all individually took note of something being there. Unless there are bipedal, black primates on Long Island, this was no animal. There was no significant glare. We all took serious issue with what we had witnessed. Also it was definitely injured and was walking on two legs.

I swear on my life this happened and if i brought the other two in to corroborate the story they would sullenly oblige

always enjoy reading your posts man, and love how you keep calm and just explain your view instead of rising to some of the other posts on here.

I think it also comes down to how you view evidence and knowledge. Alot of people on here seem to see science as untouchable and the only knowledge worth having, which is also how I saw things not too long ago. The thing is, the belief in a knowable and describable reality that can be discovered through empirical research is as much a belief as anything else and the findings it produces are only abstract narratives that we use to structure the world. Mathematics doesnt exist as a thing, it is a framework that draws a straight edge around a curved and dynamic reality . Of course it works very well in a lot of areas but its not the be all and end all. Intuitive knowledge can be just as important and the two often intersect, check out the Tao of Physics by fritjof capra if you have the time.

I havent experience ghosts/spirits myself but I know very trustworthy and down to earth people who have had multiple experiences of this kind and I believe them. How could anyone scientifically 'prove' a experience they have had, what kind of tools do we have to measure these things? Imo its ridiculous to try and apply scientific method to everything in the world, or at least very unsatisfactory. Some things you have to work out for yourself and just because one person believes one thing and you believe another that doesnt make them stupid.

Yes but science makes a claim about something and then finds evidence to back it up, if no evidence is found then the theory is discarded. Whoever makes the claim is responsible for proving it. There is no single bit of proof for pretty much any of the crap dtr talks about apart from anecdotes from hippies, it's about time it was all discarded as a theory.

Please watch this video if you haven't already.

sure they may be trustworthy people themselves, but human beings and our perceptions are inherently flawed and imperfect. it boils down to occam's razor, and the fact that such phenomenon are much more easily and consistently explained as the human brain subjectively interpreting natural occurrences as something supernatural, rather than something supernatural that defies established and extensively proven knowledge.

i don't think it makes them stupid, but i do think it's foolish and ignorant to think that the subjective, anecdotal experiences of a single human mind are reliable enough to draw such a massive conclusion from. and that's the point of science (and why it works so well) - it aims to remove human subjectivity from the matter.
