yeah the whole kick plus hat or kick with high end is pretty much open ended, depends on personal preference

I soft clip my master (it doesn't actually go in to the red, so it's not digital clipping per se) and just mix my drums really really loud. It works wonders in tunes with not many elements, but I'd never do it in a dubstep tune.

That sounds awful but clipping can give you a bit of extra headroom with no impact on the sound. Just trim off some of the excess transient, almost surgical
