They won't be attacking anyone because the stakes are too small, but they can very well decide to block any UN resolution in the near future (both are P5 members with veto power). Both of them already vetoed a Chapter VII (maintaining of peace) sanction against Syria 1 year ago.

Honestly I wish more leaders were like Putin, he may be corrupt as fuck and a dictator, but the man at least is honest.

You'd have to do a lot of reading to get answers, between the Shiites-Alawites relations which go way way back, the fact that jihadists tied with Al-Qaeda support the rebels,... There's too much to take into account

Google Syria and have a look at it on a map. It's a prime piece of territorial advantage that . connects Turkey, i.e. Europe to the middle east via land. Especially to Saudi through Iraq, because they want a fat pipeline to export their oil and gas.
