I think themes would help make it a bit different...force people to try different things outside their comfort zone. Like a DnB tune, sound tracking a scene from Aliens, ambient piece etc.

Here we go again. Not to be dramatic, but if themes are like very important, you can count me out. I'm a slave to the music, I do what it wants. I don't get to choose what happens really. Dramatic, I know, but for realz though.

Fair enough, i see your point. My argument would be that without any real cohesive element, it's just a localized version of the Dubs board.

Has always been your point. To which I reply, "I'm fine with that." haha, no the difference is that we're not just like spamming and self promoting, haha, as if promoting was getting listens on sc, haha, okay, I'm back. We've had a good group of people, who stayed tight, and operated ethically and within moral limits, I swear, no alpacas were harmed.

All I'm saying is that if people want that sort of unstructured place for feedback, we have the dubs board which hardly anyone gives feedback in...just seems counterproductive to make a smaller version of something we already have.

But dubs is a wasteland, why would I build my mansion there?

Forgot to mention, the real and actual unifying theme is that you've got to produce a track a week. That is the theme. They're not really finished releasable songs, they are production forum songs, it is an art/production technique to develop strength and insight.

I don't get it. You have a week to come up with a song right? And then the next week you have to come with another song right? SO then when the fuck do you talk about tracks of each week?

Our deadline was on Friday. So, like, as soon as the tracks were posted up, over the weekend. It was fairly informal, but it did get done.

Yeah, +1 on themes. You can run with it loose or strict as ya like. Artistic Interpretation leaves room for a lotta leeway. I mean, NWJ - if you're feeling like making a Nina Hagen tune and the theme is 'October' then you do like Nina Hagen as a server girl at Oktoberfest or something.

Yeah... There are some subtle (sometimes negligible, sometimes not) problems with he status quo tbh:

1) track sequencing can impact perception of a tune's relative quality, and not just musically but technically (quieter tracks, etc). While there aren't a lot of options to deal w amplitude discrepancies, randomizing track order helps level the playing field.

2) Voter fraud; thankfully I don't think it reared its ugly head recently but it has happened. Everything from a contestant PMing his m8's "oi, vote for me" to sock puppet voting and beyond. There really has to be a way to pin one person/one vote down. How? I have no idea...

-q-

All this has been discussed in the past. Even if these and other wrinkles aren't totally solved tho I'm still down, because these contests with deadlines are the only thing that get me to finish a tune these days
