Cambridge was nicely covered in the doc Gareth mentioned - the idea being that once a few people in a certain field set up shop somewhere, others will naturally follow. Having everyone together in one place seems to create the buzz which drives a city's organic growth. Apparently Cambridge is struggling to expand as fast as it could/should whilst trying to maintain its "heritage" look whilst Liverpool is struggling to contract, spending money they don't have to keep unoccupied, but culturally 'significant' buildings standing.... if only that buzz had been directed towards Merseyside!

Tbf, the concentration of nice buildings in Cambridge and London is probably higher than in Merseyside.

At the moment there is a council merger delayed because Liverpool want to hold more of a significance in the title of the merge

There is a phrase about self importance destroying progression but it's escaped me.

Yeah, but the point is that Cambridge is using all of its old buildings already (it's got a pretty decent natural size just thanks to having one of the most famous Universities in the world!), so it's got to build new ones to accommodate the new industry. Liverpool or Sheffield could be redeveloping brownfield sites to fit modern use instead of Cambridge eating into its green belt...

I'd heard nothing of this so went and looked and yeah it doesn't look great but I think there's more to it. The title is kinda cumbersome but should be able to be addressed. The point I think is that Liverpool is the stronger seller of the councils in trying to attract business and trying to create an authority calling it "Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton and Wirral combined authority" neither reflects it or helps it.
I'm not taking a position here as I really don't know enough but I definitely agree councils should be larger and with greater autonomy if we are serious about assisting the regions.

They are though, Sheffield is practically unrecognisable from what it looked like in the late 90s. The centre anyway. Redevelopment takes time, given the horrendous nature of planning permissions. Then you have to get seed money to kick off a bit of redevelopment to attract people/businesses back to a place thats been deserted. Once you make the place look a bit prettier, you then need to get a critical mass of new business influx before it starts to look like a workable scheme. I think Sheffield's done a great job in just 15 years.

I last lived in Liverpool 10 years ago and the place is unrecognisable in parts. There are regeneration success stories that often get lost.

Thatcher actually reversed the decline in London's population, I know because Boris said her orbituary as it's a good thing. I reckon it would have continued to go down if UK manufacturing had stayed on course.
I think the SE-centrism is a bad thing because it gives them a disproportionate amount of political and economic leverage over everyone else

but here's a fear right....
spending the next 5-10 years trying to get what you "want"...
and then you get it - and it's not even what you thought it would be...
some where along the line - something changed or became apparent
and boom...everything continues to suck - but just in a new and different way.
I'm not fully negative though...I still like a whole lotta things.

Everyone in this post - except myself
Is talking about this so objectively...
What would make life better for you personally...
If you could engineer the city - for better living.
You just want tech jobs? and swipe activated business centers?
That's weak.

That's one of the reasons I like Savannah so much...
...you'll be right downtown, and look up
and see a tree growing on another tree...

...even when you're driving...
Savannah...Savannah, Georgia USA
oh - and there is a reason it's called Savannah...
You have to drive through one to get there...
an alligator infested one...it's pretty remote - it's a secret.

I was stopped at a light once...
and a big ass hawk flew in a grabbed a pigeon...
and started shredding the guts out of it right there...
I'm in traffic - got a donut from the drive thru in one hand
and I get "when nature attacks"
no - it wasn't a jelly donut.

LD what youre describing sounds a bit like an impossible hipster paradise…obviously that sort of affordable cool lifestyle/environment for a whole district sounds pretty sick but it never lasts. Or it turns "fake" somehow too quick and hipsters move in/out.
Genevieve, roll in and tell us why this is some naive ignorant middle class fantasy, and that malls and steel skyscrapers are really best for everyone.

I know right!!??
I spent my entire high school and early 20's
talking about how awesome the South St. area in Philly is...
and in a matter of about 2 years - the expensive handbags move in...
strip it completely devoid of character and leave it as a shell.
Then some smug neuvo riche graphic designer cum assistant magazine editor...
swoops in with a "been there" headline and it's dead.
Now it's all foreign pay per phone cards and smoking paraphanalia.
Isn't that weird - I feel like some cartel moved in...
At least russian mafia had space and brought the nitrous.
This new thing is like...gay - like Kanye the gay fish
