Something to think about-
If it's wrong and potentially racist for white people to appropriate black culture in art, is it also racist for black people to appropriate white culture in art? and does this even happen?

This isn't my definitive opinion, just want to get a discussion going and see what other people think

The people who argue that "appropriation" is wrong wholesale like that are actually very few and far between. But they would probably say the power dynamic between white people and black people means black people can't actually appropriate from white people in an oppressive manner.

good point man.i think sometimes appropriation is a positive thing and can help bridge gaps and misunderstanding between different cultures etc, but it has to be done in the appropriate context.

I'd agree to an extent. Art can be as offensive as the creator makes it, provided there's some kind of message behind it rather than just for the sake of offending people (all imo of course)

Afrofuturism is inherently contentious for many reasons. I've heard it argued that the whole idea of futurity/modernity - linear progress - is a Western construct, so it already brings some Europeanisms to the table. However, given that the African diaspora's music has become all but inseparable from global pop music at large you could say it's irrelevant or just part of the ongoing dialog between these currents.
