i should also just say that there are competing views on just these simple concepts. Wave function collapse (or the "observation/measurement") is believed by one school of thought (Copenhagen) to be that the probabitlies of (back to the cat metaphor) the cat being dead or alive collapse into a single reality through the act of opening the box (measurement).
The competing "many worlds" view believes that this Wave function collapse doesnt happen at all, it just appears so, its just that the other probablity, becomes unmeasurable, not that it disapears ( i think this is called quantum decoherence). Basically (and this is where it gets fun for me) when you open the box and find the cat alive, another universe extends from that point in which you opend the box and found the cat was dead

How many quantum physicists does it take to change a lightbulb?
There is no answer. There is too much uncertainty. There may not even be a damn bulb in the socket to change. Or if there is, it may go out just by looking at it. Or it may spontaneously change into a carrot. It's all too frightening. Best not ever leave your bed.

Two Hydrogen atoms walk into a bar, one turns to the other and says:
"damn I think I just lost my electron",
the other replies "are you sure?"
"yeah, I'm positive"

Classic. Science jokes are the best. They make my inner spod glow.

i haven't read the whole thread yet and i'm super high but here's what i think about quantum physics:
basically these dudes are coming up with all these crazy conclusions about imposible states and parallel universes because they are examining crazy shit go down at the sub-atomic level.
i'm thinking basically if you accept string theory and brane theory it accounts for the randomness, because both state that there are spacial dimensions beyond what we perceive. basically the electrons are moving in and out of spacial dimensions we don't know exist, and they appear to be doing random shit. einstein was never into the idea of randomness and neither am i.

i really think the idea of a probability cloud is ridiculosity

its like if you lived in a 2-d world, and there was a threaded needle going in and out of your flat space in 3 dimensions, you would experience seeming random unconnected points, but in reality, you just can't perceive beyond 2-d
both string theory and brane theory are saying there's more dimensions.
it doesn't just account for gravity's weakness, but in my personal opinion, explains away the need for this quantum probability bs

I'd agree, not much, but I think Science is one of the things we can be surer about in life, at least it's up there with the fact that the plural of Lego is Lego.
