slow down a jungle track, you got hip hop, or dubstep


speed up a reggae tune or the right dubstep track, you got jungle

I agree....breakstep was always ineresting when the sound was emerging alongside dubstep. It was exciting when Dubstep, Grime, Breakstep and Dark Garage were occupying the same sonic space and mixes provided a cross section of the overall movement.

Good to see a re-emergence with a good undercurrant of producers and infrastructure in place. Labels like Urban Graffiti, Combat and of course Destructive are pushing these sounds and hearing more breaky tracks in mixes is great for the rhythmic diversity of mixes and nights etc...

I think with most genres after the primary days of experiementation fade the simpler and more minimal tracks come to the surface before the more complex/maximal tracks come to the fore...people need to acclimatise to the tempo and elements of something like dubstep before the more indepth and complicated sounds can be understood.....

Exactly the same circle happened with dnb....experiemntation of jungle followed by things getting stripped right back to the basics and then producers taking things in new directions with a higher production focus...e.g hospital/bassbin/barcode...

Instead of things getting overly technical and losing the groove it is important to add more emotion and refine/redefine the groove.

Most of my productions are break heavy. Its always been about the drums for me...There are certain breaks that i will always use in my tunes just cos i love them so much. My production nods back to the days of oldskool and jungle, never really considered myself as a dubstep producer...

All about S&D, Elemental and Toasty for me - proper drum science from these guys.

Stormfield has been working on a remix of one my tracks which is sounding pretty damn heavy

Paradox released 2 tracks on the Archive label from italy, some years ago. Look out for "Paragon of Virtue"... proper heavy drum workouts. Dark and funky.

"Syncopation" is anther wicked track, still play it in my sets.

The Bracket remix I did is a bit like this vibe, dirty chopped drumbreaks at the forefront. Will drop it at the combat radio show this Jan 31st

I quite like the way drumfunk tracks contain the swing and groove of the original drummers - you end up making a different track from sampled break loops, more loose, natural and ruff sounding, than you would a track made from individual drum hits.

I guess a notable exception is Reso, who uses his own drumming skills to make sick beat arrangements.
