True, and I'm mostly off my high horse about these issues ATMboomnoise wrote:well possibly true but you could present a very reasonable argument to say that demographics have to exist before you produce something for them that will be as successful as the sun has been.EFA wrote:A demographic they are semi responsible for, see edited prev post...boomnoise wrote:Sun writers aren't stupid. but that's another arguement
plus the daily mail isn't owned by news corp. it is independently evil of them.

For the attention of: Dotun Adebayo
I read your article today and afterwards I was filled with rage. Now, this wasn't a rage in which anyone would end up "shanked" as your piece suggests, but a rage at how someone could write such patently absurd nonsense, and also go on to dismiss a scene of which he knows absolutely nothing about.
The 'life imitates art' theory has been the modus operandi of mediocre, sensationalist journalism for time immemorial, and you seem to be proud to carry on this ridiculous and absurd tradition with absolutely no shame whatsoever. One really does have to ask the question:
"Did Mr Adebayo get into journalism in order to report fact, or to pander to a populist, aggressively xenophobic, problem-creating media vehicle's agenda?"
Well, the latter looks more plausible given this performance in today's edition of The Sun.
The problem with your article was not that it was in a red-top tabloid, nor was it that you were critical of the "state" of today's music scene, but much more to do with the fact that you have attempted to defame a scene which has been at the forefront of UK underground music since its inception (during the decline of UK Garage). Now, if I were a Doctor, you would expect me to be qualified to talk about medicine, would you not? However, if I was merely a journalist with no connection to, or understanding of, my subject matter, would you not consider my writing to be absolutely without merit and actually damaging to my journalistic credentials? Yes? Me too!
To imply that Grime music is responsible for violence is moron fodder. Yes, there are elements for whom grime is negative reinforcement. Does it affect their real-life actions? I sincerely doubt it. Young people have a myriad of bad examples in all of today's walks of life to draw their rage from. I do happen to remember when The Rolling Stones played at Altamont in the 60's, their hell's angels pals stabbed a fan to death. There were plenty of Dotun Adebayos back then who tried to write off the music in the tabloid press because of the perceived excesses and dangers of Rock n' Roll. In the 70's it was punk. The 80's? Heavy metal. The 90's? Rave culture. The 00's? Emo. Now, we fast forward to the present and here we are, another hack journalist with no knowledge of his subject matter, who has gone to one gig with the preconceived notion that what he will witness will be some hysteria-inducing, primitive nonsense; a man so detached from reality that he cannot draw any tangible conclusion other than "love: good, grime: bad"; a man whose inarticulate rambling about being so angry he could "shank" someone if he were more violently inclined merely betrays the character of the man writing the article.
The way you casually ignored the violence of the mods and rockers, the ska/skinhead scene, the reggae scene, etc, shows a historical revisionist bent that could be comparable with David Irving.
Other correspondence directed to you after this article was published will no doubt list the positives of the scene we are involved in, and the artists whose DIY ethics and hard work have yielded successes and chart positions alike, so I won't go over what they have said. I will, however, pose you a question:
Do you think you're perhaps that detached from how things are at street-level that you don't have a clue what you're talking about?
You're really doing a disservice to young black people when you talk about how you could have been a menace to society because of the music you had just listened to. You're reinforcing stereotypes and putting up boundaries. How utterly facetious, condescending and disingenuous can you be? You have really outdone yourself Mr Adebayo, and I hope you're proud. Enjoy your career while it lasts, because the next generation will make dinosaurs like you extinct.
Yours Sincerely,
Tarik Cherkaoui
