I only buy vinyl. but I would never diss somebody who's only buying digital music. each person should decide for his/her own what he likes best. I don't give a shit if someone's dropping a distance tune on vinyl or as an mp3...as long as he's dropping some sick music.

but imho vinyl is a big part of the excitement of DJing. you don't get the same feeling by mixing with CDs or with your laptop...it's just about the feeling you get when you have a record in your hand and know that there are 2 or 3 SICK tunes on it and you are goin to play SOME tune on THIS plate...dunno if you get what I'm trying to say...but I think you just get this feeling by DJing with vinyl.

I would never have started DJing after seeing someone mixing withs CDs or the laptop...to me it was always about buying records, get them on your 1210s/TTs/whatever, put the needle on...and watch the ride

on a side, Has anyone have a computer crash or their tunes wiped off their harddrive? I wonder what the odds or statistics are?

I prefer vinyl because it's what i was born and raised on. I love the physical. I don't fully trust digital. There have many cases where the sound quality is either ripped too high or too low. Then again, with vinyl, you have warping or scratch problems. For travel purposes, nothing beats going to a gig with a laptop instead of a ton of records. But for us older heads with crates upon cartes of wax, our back cats are irreplaceable.

In the end it doesn't matter. A top selecter will stand the test of technology.

Both. None of all this either OR Bollocks for me. And I always buy the vinyl of tracks that people have sent me as prerelease mp3s to support the artist.

For me, there are benefits to both, not least being, if I'd been digital dj way back when I was a jungle and detroit techno dj, I wouldn't have lost my collection of early metalheadz and some of my UR when the thieving C*nts I shared a studio with decided to liberate them when we parted company..

"all the best tunes are on vinyl"? bit of a dumb generalisation - what about all the ones that will never see the light of vinyl because they are unlicensable/ unclearable?

The best tunes are independent of format  there are quite a few shite tunes on vinyl too...

A big benefit of digital to those of us getting a bit older, or with conditions is the ease of transport. I have a wrecked back, and just can't lug crates, or big record bags with me anymore. It's one of the reasons that I quit playing out a few years back. Now that I have Torq & digital toons I can look into getting a spot here & there playing out.

last time i was up at amoeba music in l.a., i was looking for dubstep and happened to find a dnb tune (life - cybaspace dom&roland rmx) that was used for like $4. i had been looking for this tune forever, even ordered it twice from overseas and once was cancelled, second time they took my payment and didn't return my contact attempts. i pretty much gave up until then thinking it was not meant to be.

it figures that i would find it for a few bucks when i'm not looking for it... hahaha

i will NEVER get this excitement from downloading anything. never.

plus vinyl feels good, it's fun, and to me, it makes djing feel legitimate as a hobby. i just don't feel like i can walk into a place with cd's or a laptop and feel like i'm doing something that i should be payed for... that's a personal thing though. it just feels good to 'put a record on.' not really so for 'putting a cd in' or 'pressing space bar on the laptop'

if i'm at a free show, or seeing local talent, i don't care what people are playing on... but if i pay good money to see someone from out of town come rock it, i get really bummed when i see cds, serato, or laptops. i want the real thing.

like i said before, real bands don't cut corners because their gear is too heavy, or too much to take traveling, or too expensive to keep up... they do it because that's how they want it, and that's just how it is. they don't really tour with everything they would use in the studio, but you get the point. i hate to see my favorite professional producers and djs 'cutting corners' instead of cutting vinyl.

as much appeal as digital has to the person buying the digi gear and mp3s- i have never heard any appealing aspect to the audience that would favor digital over vinyl. maybe the freshness of dubs? this also introduces the whole quality control thing which i will not get into.

final argument- i saw judge jules in LA one time playing off cdjs and that shit started skipping. WTF, in front of thousands of people! granted he could have had the same or similar problem playing records, but people might have been more sympathetic... i.e. "oh man, that sucks" instead of "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
it was funny as hell and i'm sure embarrassing. the fact that everyone in the room simultaneously thought 'damn dude, cd players are sooooo lame' or something to that effect is evidence enough to me that it is a pretty universal opinion, no matter what digi supporters say.

to each their own though, i don't really care that much about this- but i really wish everyone hated digital :D

yeah, there's a ton of crap on vinyl, In my opinion. At least with digital they aren't trying to scam $12.99 from you.

I dunno, i love both. Saying that, it's so much more satisfying showing your friends your new vinyl for them to skank to instead of whipping out your laptop and all standing around it nodding your head in approval before exiting itunes and watching some bangbros

what he said. exactly. Plus you don't get charged repair fees to replace the bit of string.

well, i use technics brand string- it has a higher bitrate... it's about u.s. $60 an hour to get a qualified tech to tune my string. it's a real bummer with the u.s. economy right now :(

i recently made the switch to digital cans, they have a bunch of cool effects, like making your voice sound like it's next door and shit. pretty tight.

Do people think its easier to dj on vinyl or cdj's. I guess digital is easier to carry around especially if your oversees.

I must say though nothing beats a vinyl wheel up.
