hendrix got me into music as a whole, because he just did whatever the fuck he wanted which is what its all about a producer could be making the shittest beats possible, but if theyre in it for the passion and the love of music then props to them

i turned 18 in august, started producing about 2 months ago and played guitar for 4 years

yeah i mean, i was into samurai movies and such long before photek. photek was just my first "intelligent jungle" i had ever heard at the time, and it got me into the likes of autechre and aphex twin. i don't like aphex or suqarepusher anymore because that hyperprocessed jungle sound is really tired, and autechre just stopped really exploring new sounds..

i was very big into "IDM" for many years. also was into a lot of heavy punding techno from the swedish drumcode crew. love metalheadz, obviously.. ed rush is a demon. another seirously influential electronic music album for me was luke slater's "wireless"

this is all, of course, not even including all the industrial and death metal i listened to, and still do. some of the music i started with has aged very well for me. i still listen to emperor's "anthems to the welkin at disk" because it is seriously epic.

currently, i think excision and scorn are the best dubstep producers.

I used to do it because I had expectations about where music could take me, and I really wanted a career in music. Now I do it because it makes me feel good, and I end up with something I made at the end of it, which is more than you have with a movie or video game.

To paraphrase Terry Pratchett: Far more people want to have produced than want to produce.
luckily there seem to be very few of the first kind of people on here.

Before you thought I was dodging the question, I've just turned 30 (Christ ,that snuck up on me) and as everyone else has been biggin up their influences I also give much respect to Kraftwerk,Laswell,Empire, Hendrix, and Parks

also whenever I listen to Tom Waits or the first Portishead album it just makes me want to go make music.

earliest stuff was metal methinks. Lots of sepultura etc. Somewhere along the line I started listening to the prodigy (their law) the art of noise... then Goldie. I've been a dnb head since Goldie's Timeless came out.

I've always wanted to produce, mostly dnb, but then a friend showed me some dubstep recently and I fell in love with it. This coincoded with me finally buying ableton live...

I'm 26.

Well, hello everybody.
My name is Mr. Messiah and...erm...I'm a dubaholic...
Just like all of you here.

My story is quite ordinary.
Everything seemed to be perfect. I had a good job, good relationships with everyone surrounding me, pools full of champagne & hot girls... I was almost happy with my life.

Days went by, and I started to realize that I got used to all these parties, countless money, waxed convertibles and expensive designer clothes. I needed something new...

And then, I decided to consult my friend about the heaviest stuff on the block. He told me, that dubstep is one of the sickest things he ever tried. So, I thought that this was it. I asked him to get me some, and he returned in the evening with a paper bag in his hand...

I tried it, and I loved it very much. Then I decided that I need more of it. More & more & more & more... I kept on using dubstep and I couldn't stop. I've lost everything: my career, my money, my penthouse and my life. I became a slave to dubstep.

I was desperate. I needed it like one needs the air.
Then, one night, I decided to create it myself. And, you know, I can't stop doing it even now. I spent days & nights at my lab, trying to discover new formulas & combinations for it to be more sophisticated and effective.
Now, I'm getting closer & closer to my goal, and in the nearest future I plan to sell MY OWN DUBSTEP.

That's how I got into producing dubstep...

I got into it because I wanted to make nice sounding demos for my bands. Twas the late 80's. I didn't always have a band handy tho so I picked up drum machines and samplers and on and on. Eventually the whole band even myself got replaced by samples and synths.

I do it just because that is what I do. I pretty much suck at everything else. Well I can cook a little bit...

I started producing and djing about 13 years ago. strange electronica, gabba, hardcore, breakcore. when I was at school. I used to play under 18's hardcore nights at places like the Nosebleed in Rosyth and Fubar in Stirling, then jungle, techno d&b, funk hip hop.....production was a logical progression I guess, now it's all I know what to do....

Umm.. I'm 18 been producing for about 2.5 /3 years now and I started production Dubstep & Grime, much like most 15-16 year olds in London into that sorta music..

Started to get a thing for it about a year ago, started getting some air play and then about 6-8 months ago I started to dwell deeper, started learning about mix downs, synthesis and all that mahlarkey...So then the sleepless nights began, I was losing money as soon as I got it on software I had demo'd (by switching my clock on my PC back) till I could afford it..etc etc..

And now I am finally producing stuff I am happy with and feel like in a year or two time I might be vinyl worthy

The reason I produce is because I enjoy it, I think its a good way to chill out & just ignore the world for a bit and express my creative side..I would say I am pretty addicted to it though..

29, about 13 years off and on, but seriously (ie releasing vinyl) for the last 4 years, and 'professionally' (ie i now live on beans on toast and ask my mum for a loan when i need a new t-shirt) for 2 years.

i only really started doing it because the thought of not doing it filled me with horror (and it was easier than being in bands)

because I got a cut down version of ejay (of all the programes) about 10/11 years ago, tried it loved it. now 24 using Cubase SX3 been with Cubase for about 4 years, was with Reason for 4 years before that. nothing seriouse, just love messing with sounds, tho seemed to have dropped off it recently (working infornt of a computer all day does not help).

otherwise it has always been about music, before computers it was guitar, before guitars it was the clarinet. Music is soul releasing.
