uh. alot of people?
The whole "don't use samples be original" arguement can even be extended. For the ones that only use synths to program shit, then if they really want to be original, then should stop using presets. To take the concept even further, instead of making your own sounds from synths, then the only TRUE way to be original is to... make your own synths. But before you do that you have to learn a programming language, but instead of learning a programming language, make up your own language and use that. Etc.. etc..

Who cares what you use. Samples or not, just don't go and try to prove that one way of making tunes is superior than the other, and that you will be more original using one method over the other.

Originality is overrated. Just make the best music you can make.

Yep. I sample vinyl all the time. Old jungle classics can be great! :)

true

if its a hot beat its a hot beat  originality isn't the sole criteria for being able to relate to a piece of music. And I generally don't take alot of interest in what lengths of fuckery people went to acheive a particular 'sound'. Alot more impressed with a good melody than how many times you ran a patch thru your shitbox.

No offense to anyone. But its obvious that everyones gonna do it differently, so why shake fingers and set rules.

If anything, you could probably double your output if you spent time composing and arranging with presets rather than trying to make a preset sound indiscernible and meanwhile not have any idea where the music is going to 'go'.

when did i say dont use samples? was just saying when i hear a tune and i have the sample pack it was made from it get turned off if you get me.

im not saying you cant make a song from samples but its a verry hard thing to be origanal with sample packs as lots of people will have them. if your gona sample find them. im not saying dont use sample packs just imo i wouldent pay money for somthink like that. think about it if the people who made the sample pack had that good samples why are that not making tunes insted of sample packs.

I hear ya. Was just posting thoughts from discussions on the same topic today. But then, the conversations weren't as civil.

you turn off a tune if you hear a sample in a pack you have (to use i'm assuming)
no offense but that sounds a bit retarded to me
hell i enjoy when i'm digging thru a pack or cd and hear something recognizable from a song
happened to me quite a few times with the older 01-04 dnb stuff

If anything, not being afraid to break out a sample pack in addition to using "found sound" samples and creating your own stuff gives you more scope for originality, just because it straight up offers more creative options. Loads of people go on about the importance of making your own sounds, but how many of them are really going beyond the fairly normal range of wobbly bass, subby bass, dub chord, detroit chord, synth wash, rhodes, hammond, bleep...

If you grab some interesting sample packs (and I'm not talking about a dubstep sample pack with "10000 generic wobble basses, 15000 ploddy halfstep beats" here) then you can suddenly reach for an orchestral string flourish, a jazz flute loop, a high-life guitar lick, a soul vocal, whatever, and tbh I'd be more interested to hear that than someone painstakingly hand-crafting a tune that sounds quite a lot like everything else out there.

I guess crate diggin this stuff is even more interesting, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

The idea that it's somehow important to produce your own drum hits instead of using samples just seems bizarre to me. I mean, do it if you like it, but don't kid yourself that people laboriously producing hihat sounds that sound almost but not quite exactly like everything else out there is in some way essential to the style moving forward.
