^if yu really want to know beyond yr own ears
I'm sure EW will accomodate yu with full thesis.
But are yu sure yu wanna hear it?

*IMO it's the occasional sub & dub without the bpm or high-hat on 3rd.*

yeah cool, but what's "proto-dubstep" about it
Gee...I don't know. What was proto-punk about the MC5?What was proto-heavy metal about Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath?

Well...
Dictionary.com wrote:proto

adjective
indicating the first or earliest or original; "'proto' is a combining form in a word like 'protolanguage' that refers to the hypothetical ancestor of another language or group of languages"
All it means is that it Autechre had a part in certain elements that later evolved into certain forms of techy Dubstep.I hear it when I listen to Burial,TRG,Late,or Sines. It's a compliment, not an insult.

I mean really(at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man even though I know I will ),wouldn't Ska,Rocksteady,Reggae, and Dub also be considered "proto-dubstep"?A lot of Dubstep is pretty much Dub,but with a wobble and an anal-retentive BPM.I mean, how many so-called "refixes" of old reggae and dancehall tunes are out there now?In my opinion, some are good(Matty G's "War" refix being a fave),some are complete crap. But I'm really, really picky when it comes to covers(which is what a refix basically is).

Also,Autechre weren't the only ones I mentioned.Have you even heard some of the others on that little list?Half of Dub Tractor's stuff could be sneaked into a Dubstep set and the kids would be none the wiser.

I mean, honestly,do you really think that Dubstep just magically appeared out of bass bin air?

i am definately veering towards this side of the genre. Although I like the tougher sound. Found myself mostly influenced by Spamchop and TRG but i love to drop in a bit of the wobble here and there. Check out my show on Afterdark radio this saturday, plenty of minimal stuff plus techy vibes some harder stuff but id mainly describe it as aggressive sounding dub-tech if you get my drift

All good artists, I think you would also enjoy our Kontext releases, another forthcoming in March.

Was just about to mention Kontext. For me, his sound is the perfect embodiment of 'minimal x dubstep'. Sick, sick producer. Think T++ is worth a mention, too. His beats are just soooooooo stripped.

Would agree that 7even are pushing the deep techno/dubstep vibe supremely well right now, along with the likes of Hotflush, Tectonic, 3024, Apple Pips, Hessle and Punch Drunk. And let's not forget our beloved Skull Disco (R.I.P.), which, granted, is a little more leftfield than the others. Most of Shack's recent output shares a lot with minimal, as evidenced by Ricardo Villalobos's close involvement.

This kind of cross-pollination is all good in my book, and is one of the things that makes dubstep so exciting right now. Long may it continue!

Btw, if people want to hear this sound played out in London, check out our new night: www.myspace.com/colonyparty - upcoming guests include Sigha, Spatial and Untold, plus a selection of straigh techno acts (and more). Come down and show the love!

Exactly whats going on with my taste right now. Dont get me wrong I love the big tunes but as a budding DJ and producer I find this side of the genre so fresh and loose with boundaries.

Shame dude. Sigha ripped it up good and proper with some lush techno-meets-dubstep business, much of which he produced himself. The boy sure knows how to play. Watch out for Spatial at the next one (March 21st). Much bigness will ensue again, I'm sure...

Big up the crossover crew!
