It's possible he listens to it. Him and Chad came to a grime rave we held in Glasgow in December 06...

all of this. I like some of Pharrell's/Neptunes' stuff, I'm pretty open to commercial Hip Hop as long as it sounds good to me but a lot of stuff coming out these days is insulting.

imo a step in the right direction for the US rap game would be a step away from Lil' Wayne

More palatable than a lot of wobble proper IMO.

I love how every hip hop video on youtube has a 5 page discussion under it about whether or not Lil Wayne raped Kool Herc.

Everyone always moans about commercial stuff being crap but never really provide any decent explanations/examples. A lot of dubstep tunes are made quickly, so it seems it's not really a good basis for judging quality.

All of those 'mainstream' producers like Neptunes, Timbaland, Polow, The Dream, etc. etc. are easily as good as the so called 'golden era'.

HHHAAAAA...that is a good joke right there.

RZA, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Spinna, the Shocklee brothers, Premo, and tons of others who made hip hop worth anything, destroy anything the Neptunes, Timba, Polow, the Dream ever did. Maybe they are more, "technically proficient", but they have no ear for sounds that I could give a fuck about, and sound like they were made on a casio keyboard, with weak terrible synths and absolutely retarded lyrics for the artists that rap over them.

These amazing producers I have listed made quality beats, and still do except Dilla (RIP)..... but I will take even the worst Dilla beat over the Neptunes any day. These artists inject that soul element to their sound that the modern day mainstream producers seemed to have lost.

When I was into hip hop in the golden era, the mainstream hip hop WAS good hip hop. If you watched Yo MTV raps, and rap city back then, 90% of the tunes played were really good, amazing stuff. Can't say the same for now.

Thats coz they jacked all their samples from all the good funk and soul records. notice how hiphop got shitter as the obvious samples got used up and were fewer and far between.

i wouldn't even necessarily even call myself a rap lover, i just think hating on weezy is lame. name 5 more prolific rappers out there still making relevant music? and don't go out there giving me some backpacker nonsense that had its heyday in 2001.

i don't even know if this warrants a response.

for me, if the flow is hot and it sounds blazing on a beat...i could care less what dude is talking about. i'm not trying to look at wayne as some sort of poet, dude just knows how to get on a mic and spit bars. plain and simple.

it's not like grime is about teddybears and lollipops, either. hah, and i can barely understand 1/2 the shit even talked about in that music, but i still love it to death. i guess i put more stock in the overall sound/flow/way the vocals maneuver around the beat instead of the content.

'Wayne, chillin like a scarecrow, lookin for some brain
Drivin in the range or, flyin' on the plane'

anyone hating on the man is taking his music WAY too serious.

EDIT: Freeman, i hear what you are saying though. I think it's tough to hold anything right now up to the golden age you are referring to [btw, if you haven't heard the Rub's mixtape series that chronicled every year of hip hop, i highly recommend checking out the 1992-1994 mixes.] I would never try to argue the Neptunes are better producers than Dilla or anything of the sort.

I do think that if the bar for creativity in hip hop production right now was raised, I think it could end up injecting a lot of creativity to MCs, etc. and creating a new generation of awesome rap music potentially.

Flying Lotus, LuckyMe crew, some of the Bristol heads are all making some amazing hip hop/rnb music right now and I'm all for elements of that being brought back into rap and making it sound fresh and interesting again for once in the past 10+ years.

Sampling was the basis of hip hop. Look at the way it began. Kool Herc would just take the breaks from his favorite tunes while djing house parties, it was all samples back in the day.

All these new hip hop producers have no excuses. Get a freaking funk band in the studio with you (like the Roots do it) and fucking make a tune that way. get a guitarist, piano player, etc. Choose "quality" sounds for your synth sounds.... There is no excuse to put out shit.

Pete Rock still puts out amazing stuff, and he gets people in the studio all the time doing live shit. Saying we can't sample anymore is just an excuse. If dubstep producers put out tunes that were as awful as most new hip hop, would anybody in this scene buy it? I for one would be long gone.

I think Lil Wayne is a terrible rapper.... I'd love to see him go up against anyone in the WU Tang. I've heard people say he is the best rapper out these days (my co-worker for one) That right there shows me the terrible awful state hip hop is in, cause his shit bores me to death. The one new guy who I do like though is Twista.... now that guy flips it. To bad his producer sucks ballz.

yea, dont get me wrong mate, i used to listen to alot of rap a few years back,. maybe i was just purely listening to the wrong artists, but everything seemed to revolve around killing your enemies, raping their women and being loved for being the biggest tnuc in the world.

found myself becoming increasingly frustrated by it all, but at the same time still enjoying the beats, just ended up hating the rappers and their bullshit lyrics.

maybe drifted slightly off topic here, but just thought i ought to get that across

Uuuuh Twista's been around for YEARS. And which producer do you mean - he's worked with a few? Surely not Swizz Beats?
