When I'm not using Reason, I use Reaper. It is true that it is not everyone's cup of tea. However, I'd personally recommend trying the demos of other DAWs until you find one you really really like.

Things I personally like about Reaper include;

The midi piano roll simplicity
The one sequencer does everything idea
The scrolling and zooming
The way it handles audio editing

I got a free demo of Ableton with my keyboard ages ago and just dismissed it (now lost it) because it looked complicated so I'll try not to do that again here. I think it does give you some more ideas using more programs, I particularly like that you can see the waveform you're playing in one of the reaper synths and I'm unable to recreate that tone in reason.

Awesome pack, a couple of things on there I hadn't seen. I think I'll install it on my crappy 5 year old laptop as it looks quite light so I have something to do when I'm really bored out and about.

One ****** though - Reaper is NOT freeware. You're just as obligated legally to pay for it as you are anything else, it just dosen't force you technologically. Pay for it guys, its cheap as for non commercial use ($50!) and its awesome.

All you need is Reaper and some freeware vsts. Reaper is available for mac. download it at reaper.fm

Reaper has its own vst folder, so as long as you have everything in one folder, your 'portable'! No installation, just plugin and play

I've been using it ages, it's bloody brilliant.
Someone should make a portable (legal) Acid 7, I'd pay any (reasonable) amount of money for that.

The best thing to do would be to email the creators of the apps you like and thank them directly. They're the ones who put the time and effort in to create everything contained here.

Can I ask, have you added plugins to the setup or are the ones contained sufficient for your needs?

I added a couple of filters, the ones included go a bit crazy...
when I quit off the filter, the audio cuts out on that track, until I bypass it... Just added a couple of others.

This will probably sound well stupid, i'm new setting up my own software so I haven't got a clue. Can I get free VST's for a mac easily enough, or do they work on PC/Mac both the same?

I'll check other threads but if anyone could give me a quick runthrough, that would be sound.

i love this plugin so easy to use and sounds nice. have you got the demo or the full one.

I'm well glad this was bumped. I've been hunting down free VSTs for years, and somehow managed to miss half the ones in this pack.

Seriously epic props for putting this together!

A couple of things as this great thread lives again:

First, Big up futures. Cool stuff in here.

Second, Reaper V3 is available now from http://www.reaper.fm/ so everybody should get that.

Third, Reaper already has a sampler built in, the SamplOmatic 5000. Not the most features ever seen in a sampler, but you can drag from the media explorer, and import from the arrange window.

just paid £27.79 for it and have to way 4 hours or more to get my code

some of the other fx's you got here i must try. but i would say your synths are weak Green Oak's Crystal (the best freeware synth shhhh dont tell any) and maybe TAL-Elek7ro would be better imo

Yeah man, the Tal Elektro may well make it into the next repack, although I'm seriously thinking of just including my own freeware synths instead. Any of my own synths will be geared towards ease of use.

The GTG synth is very simple to figure out and comes with a healthy selection of presets. Atlantis is more experimental, but still easier to figure out than Crystal (which is more flexible).

I'll do the repack in the coming few weeks when I get the time.
