I always rewire R3, although the 'lack of bit depth' has never bothered me. The real reason I rewire is to access the plethora of fantastic vst effects available! :)

I use rex loops all the time. They offer quick flexability in creating variations of existing loops. The Dr.Rex device also allows users to pitch up or down entire loops quickly. If the NN-XT is used, it's possible to replace individual hits in a loop. Finally, rex loops are synched to tempo. This is good when experimenting with tempo changes etc.

I often make beats in Reason, then export them as a .wav and rex them. This gives me easy and fast access to all the loops I've made! :)

The subjective & unbiased truth:

Reason 4 has several new features as you already know. Any decision to upgrade should be based solely upon your actual audio processing needs, not just Versionitis.

The new features in summary;
  • *Thor
    *A new sequencer & arrangement system
    *The arpeggiator device
    *The Regroove mixer (Adds shuffle & swing to beats)
    *A new devices window allowing users to drag and drop devices into the rack
Where does this leave us? What are the pro's and cons?

Let's discuss each new feature in turn:
  • *Thor (Over-rated, ugly, fidly & badly outdated. Thor does nothing other synths haven't been doing better for years).
    *A new sequencer & arrangement system. (Awkward and counterintuative. Will reduce your workflow rate until you've taken the time to re-adjust).
    *The arpeggiator device (Pretty fucking cool! 8) Too little to late however...)
    *The Regroove mixer (Great if you like to use quanisation grooves in your music).
    *A new devices window allowing users to drag and drop devices into the rack (Gets in the way when you're trying to work. Luckily can be switched off.)
Overall, I find the new device window annoying, the new device default patches also annoying (although they can be switched off), the new sequencer sickening, and Thor a pile of turd. Reason 4 couldn't be further from Ableton if it tried.......* :o
)
You hit the nail on the head there dude.

Ah I forgot a new feature of Reason 4. The ability to automate changes in the project tempo. This feature is sorely lacking Reason 3, but can be worked around using rewire hosts.

It seems opinions of Reason 4 are polarised! At the end of the day, a good workman can use any tools to create a masterpiece. Good music existed hundreds of years before electricity was harnessed!

To the original thread poster, let us know what you think after trying the demos out! :)

how am i the only one in here mentioning bit depth and stuff past what you can learn on the box of the program? i cant be the only reason user here since the 2.x days

the instruments in reason 3 vs reason 4 really dont mean alot tbh....yay, you got a thor in reason 4 which could be nearly replicated using reason 3 utilities....congrats for those who hadnt done that before i guess....the arpeg thing never really did much for me since again, it could be nearly replicated using a matrix and some lfo filters on stuff

will say the regroove is nice for knockin shit off the grid...not the best for most applications tunes wise though ive found unless doing glitch or hiphop

biggest issue here has to be the bit depth though for me though.....if you take your reason 3 sessions, load them normally and bounce them out of reason 4....you will be doing yourself a favor as far as i know coding wise between the 2 versions of the program

yeah lets just shit all over hours and hours of dedicated programming why not
Its common practice to get software for free in most areas of the internet but I see where people are coming from when they buy software.

This website is not the place to discuss it tho :D

hahaha i'm not saying i haven't "acquired" programs

i'm just always surprised by people who are all 'YOU ACTUALLY PAID FOR A MUSIC PROGRAM??? OH MY GOD"
dont get me wrong i pay for some of my gear - i'm just very surprised at someone buying reason as everyone i know seems to have a copy lying about somewhere, different circles of people have different bootlegged stuff shared between them.

This probably is obvious when you get deeper into production. I couldn't really get the difference from first listen.

Overall, it seemed that Propellerheads tried reinventing everything and somewhere along the way few things got out of hand. It does feel uncomfortable - not really feeling sequencer.

Thanks for replies, really helpful.
