upsides:
-emergencies : twitter was used to great effect during the earthquake in italy. (especially for telling authorities where people were trapped, making sure love ones were alive, ok, injured etc...etc)
-if you've got something to hype its a great way to hype.
-real time info as someone said before.
downsides:
-just another way to really interact with people less and less. because humanity needs more half-interaction, instead of real.....?!!!?
-designed for blackberry's in mind, so it's no secret that all the big cell companies are on it by the end of the year...to flood the market with more "twitter" ready cell phones, and also flood the bandwidth with twittering. let's make nokia, palm, LG, Samsung and blackberry very rich yes?

Make the cell phone companies rich? They already are aren't they? I am not getting a phone just to twitter on. I have had a cell phone for 10 years I kinda have to keep filling their pockets at this point and twitter ready? They ALL are twitter ready, you don't even need the internet add on you can do it with text. Just not sure what point you are trying to make there that is all.

Neurotik wrote:I don't see the point in having a profile on every networking site available. I personally prefer myspace because of the level of customisation i can add to my profile to better preflect my personality and for the music profiles and networking. Other than that i had a facebook account twice, once i was talked into it then never used it and again where i actually wanted to check out all the hype then...i found myself not really speaking to anyone on it, sitting there pointlessly on the apps, and being constantly hassled by app requests, pokes w/e from aload of people from school i'd forgotten about

.
Alot of people would be to quick to argue over this stuff, but myspace gets the job done and i personally find facebook annoying when i see people obsessed with it (the "thats going on my facebook staus" to absolutely every single irrelevant event in their day), and all this hype over twitter annoying lol...admittedly i've never used twitter so i cant exactly say much but i use myspace, if anything, to aid in my social life not replace it

.
what, you DONT enjoy spending your days posting identical information on myriad social networking sites so you can reach the masses?
imo less outlets for information --> more time spend producing quality content. in this respect i actually like twitter because it serves as a conduit of information from whatever other sites you choose to use, so rather than maintaining redundant pages on 10 different sites you can just maintain your favorite and then post links on twitter.

^^^^^^ that.
and my tweets update my facebook status. i barely use myspace anymore. flickr is damn near necessary for the amount of pictures i take. thats pretty much the only ones i care about.
i like twitter because it lets me interact with my friends throughout the day not just on the weekends when i can see them. i share links ive found ask questions, play games. whatever. the shits useful to me at least.

soon your plants will twitter you when they need watering via moisture sensors in the soil, your car will twitter you if the alarm goes off, basically bridging a communication gap between humans and technology we rely on on a daily basis etc etc...theres massive implications for this kind of technology way beyond social networking, more like environmental networking with non human entities... this is just the beginning... youll be able to twitter your kitchen to make a pizza and have it done by the time you get home haha
just another step in the evolution of global consciousness

It's a diffferent kind of tool to MySpace. Completely different.
I guess it shares a lot in common with the Facebook status update but for me FB is about communicating with people I know and Twitter is more about those im interested in. I've been using it for around 2 years and initially I was sceptical too but as you built out your network with interesting people it becomes frighteningly addictive.
Those who are writing it off WILL be using it and loving it within 6 months
It's all about FriendFeed though... lol

Tim Westwoods twitter is so funny
some of my faves:
'Needed to wash the curtains - they've all shrunk by a foot! Now they don't even cover the windows! That's fucked up!'
'Up in Fife Scotland - we're goin in baby. We're gonna to flatten the Highlands.'
'Shout to NORE but don't go in the room where a baby's being born - you're mad - don't do that to yourself!'
'Got in late last nite. Nicked a bottle of milk from the building next store. The top came off & spilt all over my best jacket. Bloody karma!'

Twatter. I dont care if Mary Jane Hobbs has just farted. Why do people jump on these bandwagons. Fear of being left behind I think. I never touched Facebook and I only use Myspace to check out music.
