Wonky forum/website?

the near future is going to be increasingly boundaryless musically, i think music is returning to being about a person and how good they can get their ideas out into a medium..

i realised not to get caught up in terms at all now really - even if i don't agree it's still the same thing as disagreeing - either way you affirm the term. just let it pass you by and keep doing YOU!

look around you'll see the new producers putting out beats of all shapes and sizes and that is beautiful. moreso it takes more balls to be happy to do that knowing that you're harder to pigeon hole

i know what it's like to sit there and start making something that sounds like something you heard today.. all good for getting your chops up but you have to find you're own way, use you're voice.

look at dubstep and just how vain its becoming.. it's like "what?!?! no 1/16 LFO assigned to cutoff and pitch?.. i'm not paying 5 quid for that shit"

drum n bass went the same way, everyone sounds like dj hazard!

scenes form out of a coagulation of insecurity, where people say we're this or that so they feel like a unit, a movement is fine. but often those that close in from the perimeter of the movement want to seal it in and define the sound.

its a beautiful world of beats we're in, just enjoy it and let those on the sideline cast aspersions to what is what.. someone probably pays them to do it. that's fine.. but it's better to be paid to create the art with you're backs turned to those influences that take away from you're journey.

i say enjoy the moment, if its a wonky beat, so be it, if its 3/4 and its got dulcimer, zither and mongolian harps all over it with a fucking casiotone pad so be it, and if its your nan singing through effectrix then wahey!

i've just been saying Experimental Hip-Hop since so many people reject Wonky. there isnt really clear name to call the genre. it's also hard to even say what qualities make that genre and what qualities exclude something from the genre. i think some of the producers like this though, since sometimes genres can be contraining.

However, I like to be able to talk about things and have search terms i can use to find exactly what i'm looking for.

I like Flying Lotus, Bullion, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Ras G & the Afrikan Space Program. I just wish I knew what to a call it.

its just hiphop - but the slightly more weird fringe stuff,

before this lot you had people like bully records, sixtoo, prefuse, mike ladd, the prunes, anti-pop consortium, clouddead etc.. its just the next generation.

its a continuuum really.

If you really want to know where the LA thing came from check for dj take aka sweatson klank, him and a guy called kutmah started a night called sketchbook where they would play only hiphop instrumentals, people started to come through and play their own beats outside on a stereo, eventually they let those people come in and play their music inside, those people were flying lotus, ras g etc, this was back in like 2001/02

i like all of those too, but i can't really find much in common. particularly where hudson's gone now, and where flylo's going too, and where's rustie's goin with his new LP - there might have been a point at which all the artists wanted to churn out these certain type of headnod, grimey beats that for a while was a genre of sorts, but i think we're past that moment now.

everyones movin in different directions. and its def. for the best. if everyone can resist classification - aka the "wot d'ya call it moment" - then maybe they can all have longer careers than otherwise. i mean aphex twin never had a genre did he? He's AFX, he's his own genre. some fools called it IDM but they mostly got the piss taken out of em. Om unit is right when he says it will keep changing. that will keep it fresh and alive.

i wont quote it all but respect to the guy that said music will be about the individual style...i have been preaching that for so long...great to hear others are moving forward as well...

and respect to the guy that mentioned Prefuse, Clouddead, etc...

'Circle' is still one of my favorite hiphop albums...but is it hiphop? hmmm...

if artists want to their sell music why would they reject being branded in order to help sell their music??

we all know flying lotus is flying lotus music, and hudmo is hudmo and rustie is rustie, but there is a common core to their music which means that people who like rustie will most likely like hudson mohawke etc there is no problem putting them under an umbrella term cause everyone knows its just an umbrella term for convenience, no ones trying to take away their dignity

that umbrella term is hiphop for me..

but really - its subjective to you, the listener, it doesnt matter what you call it, whatever you need to - some need the umbrella some don't, and each to their own.

hip hop for me as well, just a logical progression of underground / mainstream hiphop with bits and pieces pulled in from all over.

i think danny breaks - jellyfish was a big tune for me that predated my interest in this music, whatever it is. the wide breadth and scope of what gets played at 'wonky' orientated nights is what im really into, even hear bits dropped at FWD in 'dubstep' sets etc.
