They don't call it Massive for nothing right.. I was using predator and albino for my tunes, but got turned on to Massive and have never looked back since.
I say as long as it sounds good plug away.. I just program everything from the initial preset.
I like Alchemy by Camel Audio also..Very nice synth..

All this talk of predator, I’ve sacked the synth off pretty much, I cant seem to make anything sound as phat as Massive without resorting to the in-built effects really early on (which is bad practice id say).

lol brutal electro could become a "classic / staple" in edm and years from now people will be hunting down "Vintage" copies of Massive just for it, like 808s and Roland JP-8s

If music is meant to be an expression of creativity, surely it would have to go the other way. Idea -> Make your sound.

Again, its harder to verbalise (and less clear cut) than I thought, but the idea of a preset being (worse case scenario) the basis of a tune, or even the idea behind one just seems a bit unmusical to me.

I spose, theres: Hear preset -> Gives you idea -> You fuck around with noise until its what youre hearing in your head. But thats not really what I meant originally...and is gonna require more thinking on my behalf tbh
Two issues with this.

Firstly, a preset doesn't have to be the basic idea for the track. If I want to write an oldschool style UKG tune, I might have an idea that works with a rhodes sound, some nice snappy drums, a mworrp mworrp bass sound, some strings and an organ. If I load up a preset for each of those, they'll probably be pretty close to what I had in mind, and I can get on with writing the rhythms I wanted, the bassline, all the melody parts and so on. Maybe you could even load up the rhodes preset first and start working out ideas on a keyboard. You wouldn't say that it was 'suggested by the preset' any more than the Moonlight Sonata was suggested by the piano.

But more importantly, I don't see why it's so important that you have an idea FIRST and then go through a process of realizing the sound that you had in your head as accurately as possible. If you have a convincing argument that this an essential part of making music then a lot of philosophy of art professors are going to want to hear from you.

To me what's important about music is that it's emotive, deep, fun, funky, angry, powerful, sexy, surreal, whatever - that it moves you or makes you move. Whether you have some pure idea handed down from on high before you start and then try to realize it faithfully, or whether you play around with stuff, picking up ideas as they're suggested by the way the equipment works or by the stuff that you've already got down and coming up with stuff as you go along doesn't seem particularly important to me.

You're right. And his (albeit initially convincing) argument is voided entirely when you use Samples.

They are in effect, "preset". And entire tune can evolve around one sample you picked from your collection, and you're no less creative for it. So whats the difference in patch scrolling.

 The shame Image

As you pointed out, it was a patch from a long time ago, thus my game was looser  I also built it from scratch, no presets used..! :D
