you can make a song in 15 minutes in session view if you are a good keyboard player or pad player


play out a midi sequence, duplicate and overdub within seconds all while the beats still playing. it lets you keep the vibe of the song and energy level that gets lost sometimes with standard daws

This is how I work.

I create a drum loop in session view, then I create variations. Create a bassline, then create variations, etc, etc. For me it's a great way to experiment and try out multiple takes quickly.

Then at the end I lay it out in Arrange and bounce.

send midi signals out to external hardware, audio signals to external fx, route that shit back in. record it to a new clip while freaking the knobs.

go mad with mutes while resampling, throw some crazy automation envelopes that can control whatever you desire at whatever you desire.

live is limited by the person in control.

After 2 hours playing around with it figured out a little, this shit nuff hard

switched from pc to mac 5 yrs back when i started making music.

never used fruity loops cos i couldn't get a mac version. same for acid. avoided cubase because of logics dominance of os x.

never liked logic. yeah its cool for some of you, but not me.

so, ableton was my only friend. i'ts done everything i could have wanted it to do.

it's made me happy

I've been playin wit ableton since 2.5 when my mate first showed me and I am still amazed at how awesome it is.

So far, the only thing that I have found that it can't do that I want it to is curved automation envelopes. No biggy but it's something (I am using 7 though, so if it's in 8, I don't know about it)

yep, if you set the global launch quantise to 1 bar - it's on the transport at the top, next to the 'play session / play arrangement' toggle.

What really helped me was running through the built in lessons in Live, have you tried those yet?

Also, there are a bunch of great videos on youtube. The ones from Ableton themselves are good for showing an overview of some of the things you can do. Also, check this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKUb9Txo ... annel_page

It's electro house, but I found this really inspiring when I was getting started because it showed a very fast workflow.

also click on the little triangle on the very bottom left of the screen it will open a tiny help window that explains whatever the mouse is hovering over

aye, one of the best things about live is if you spend a bit of time getting some shit hot sounds and samples together before you start a track, you can make something really nice very quickly indeed...
