For me it's all about the audio editing capabilities, and the overall feel and workflow. Wouldn't use anything else.

And I always end up using Cubase shortcuts in other sequencers and some weird shit will happen or it'll delete all the automation or something.

I heart Cubase
LOL   Play it safe mate!! Never stray from the Cubase stable.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what all this "fiddly midi" stuff is in cubase, I've been using it for years and I've never found anything fiddly about it?

I have been using cubase since 02 so I guess I am just used to the midi editor window

it's pretty a standard musical layout, afaik

yeah, i just got used to the fl piano roll which is basically amazing, and now every other one seems crap to me. its just personal preference.

I'm confused, what's wrong with the piano roll, there's a piano along side and a grid...what more is needed?

What's fiddly about the MIDI in Cubase?

I used Reason for years before, and they're pretty similar, so the MIDI editing was really easy for me to get used to.

I don't see what's so bad about the VST instrument rack, either? It takes like three clicks to load the instrument and the midi track for it, and it makes it easy to create multiple midi channels for the same VST. I dunno, I don't really consider myself a genius when it comes to software and technical stuff, but that always seemed like some of the stuff Cubase actually did WELL.

I do want to upgrade to 5, but honestly the only features I'd really be taking advantage of from the start are:

1. Quick Controls
2. Being able to select what MIDI channels are turned "on" for multi-channel VSTs like Kontakt, so that I don't have 5000 mixer channels when I'm only using 6.
3. Sidechaining and bussing without having to do a ton of weird shit
4. I know there was one more...damnit.

have you used the fl one? its lovely and big and theres all the nice things lik alt-u auto-chops notes, the way the blocks handle with clicks and stuff, its easier to see which notes are which, its nice and colourful, built in slides, just little things that make me prefer it. it always takes me about 3 times as long to write a melody or drum part in cubase.

im being pedantic basically, i can quite easily use the cubase bits, just prefer how they work in other things tbh.

I think you'd be surprised, coming from sx3 to 5 (or even 4) makes life so much easier. It's the little things that make the work flow so much easier. Some other examples would be...

* Instrument tracks - I know you said you don't mind the vst rack but it really makes a difference, not only do you get to set up in less clicks, you also get the automation tied to the trigger track so it's much easier to move stuff about and find what you're looking for.

* Drag and drop insert effects - re-arranging effects chains or moving insert effects from a track to another/group track.

* Improved audio editing - It's not major stuff but there are little differences which make all the audio editing/manipulating/hitpoint/warp stuff so much easier.

* New interface design - I know it sounds silly and you can say you don't care but the the updated colours and theme but it adds clarity and it just makes things a little bit more straight forward.

* Added bonus: Media Bay - it's not something you'll find yourself using natuarally but if you put the time in to organise and getting used to using it you'll find yourself heavily relying on it.

That's by no means a completely list, there's just loads of little bits (not to mention all the cool new big features like variaudio) which make it so much easier to use. I think the step from SX3 to 4 is bigger that from 4 to 5 but from SX3 to 5 is a huge jump in useability...I'd never ever go back to SX3!

I know it's got some cool stuff in fl8 piano rool but some of those points are irrelevent, you can vertically zoom into cubase piano roll and make it as big as you like for one. Also the colour is customisable to some extent. Don't get me wrong I know fruity loops has some cool features which no other sequencer has in this department, but I'm very happy with cubases (far nicer than Reason or Ableton).

Also on a side note, cubase introduced a new drum programmer in cubase 5, it's a different animal to fls drum programming stuff but it's more that way inclined and can simplify drum programming...

and ive never heard/seen of anyone who uses cubase for dubstep.
if anyone does please say
i feel like the cubase fish swimming in a sea of reason/ableton sharks :D

 I've been using cubase for 8 years now.. Bought myself cubase 5 last month lovin it!

I'm sorry but i think this is really a silly question. Like cubase wouldn't be good enough for dubstep? LMFAO!! It isn't about the program it's about the skillz. Some use trackers and make ill shit! And cubase is way beyond that. Personally i tried alot and think cubase beats them all.

It all comes down to personal choice though..

Truth is, the best DAW just doesn't exist.
If they try to make it, they'll quickly come to the conclusion that even though it's suppost to be "perfect", some or many people wont like it, because:
a) It lacks a certain function that others don't like and others don't
b) Certain features that others like annoy other people

Interesting! I can tell it's one of those situations where going from SX3 to 5 won't seem like a huge step forward, but going from 5 to SX3 would feel like a huge step back.

I can say straight off that I don't have the time to arrange Media Bay, especially with how unorganized my sample folder is :?

The Instrument Track thing sounds like a good idea, but when I tried it out I remember running into a problem involving routing somehow...I don't remember what though. Maybe I just wanted two midi tracks for one instrument and couldn't do it. Something about it seemed REALLY lacking though, like I couldn't believe it couldn't be done and the feature seemed like an afterthought.

The new interface and audio editing IS really nice though...as is the idea of easily rearranging effect chains. I might end up picking it up later this month since I can get an academic discount, but damn, $300 is still a lot of money to me. I wish they sold a cheaper version like Cubase Studio, except it has all of the features intact but without any of the included VSTs.
