nah the books and story at this point go magic and fucked up shit time
the red wedding missed some parts as to why some characters come back
catelyn's body got violated more and robb as well
robb had his head chopped off and his direworf murdered and head sewn on to his body and displayed as a mockery of the starks and link with direwolfs
catelyn got thrown nude into a river to sink to mock her familie's tradition
the red wedding in the book is much worse

sorry figured we had some book readers on the board, i haven't spoiled much beyond what they left out this season book wise, i haven't mentioned anything beyond what they have covered show wise, they just left out details
i've been trying not to cover later details in books in this thread, but the show has skipped some key bits which make some characters seem shit
Robb got done dirty character wise imo compared to books, and Jon one of my fave chars in the books has been one of my least fave in the show due to shitty acting and development

For the people that have read the books - how many seasons do you reckon we're in for?

Oh shit! Really? Well what's the season to book ratio so far and how many books are there so far?

5 books so far and we're half way through book 3, with season 4 being the 2nd half of it.
2 more novels are due to complete the story.
There are also 3 prequel novels and 3 novellas.

some of the books in some countries such as Australia were split down into shorter books. I think a feast of crows was split into 2 books in Australia for example

that whole scene with jon at the gift (they haven't mentioned that part of land yet) was pretty cliche. varymyr making jon kill one of his own was cheesy as fuck. varymyr dying the way he did also is bullshit.. i feel that people who have not read the books should know more about him, so im going to tell a bit more about him.. he is already dead so whats the harm :).

varymyr is a fairly evil, powerful, and twisted person. he killed his own brother early in his life using one of his many familiars. his family finds out, forcing his father to bring him to haggon, an elder warg. haggon taught varymyr how to warg properly, and becomes his mentor. varymyr eventually kills him and steals haggon's wolf that was intended for haggon to have to survive out of his human host. over the years varymyr gained 3 wolves, a bear, and a shadowcat as his familiars, thus his nickname became varymyr sixskins. what haggon also taught him before varymyr murdered him however which is incredibly important, is to never put yourself into another human. it's an abomination. varymyr didn't care, and would do it anyways. he also still lives in the books in one of his wolves named one eye, after a failed attempt to put himself into another human.

there's more.. im summarizing quite a bit.. but this is what deadly is meaning, there is so much more character development in the books.. varymyr was one of my favorites to read about, yet his role in the show was cheapened. he also never had any interest in ygritte.

re: the bolded part - could you go into more detail on this? I felt like there should have been some significance to Bran entering Hodor's mind?

at this point, bran still does not know what wargs even are, has no idea that there are others like him, or that there are unspoken rules to skinchanging. so him placing himself into hodor's mind is only natural to him. haggon however, when telling varymyr about the guidelines, tells him its one of the worst violations against another human a person can do and, in addition, varymyr would skinchange into his familiars while they mated which was also a terrible thing to do. it can replace another's body with the skinchanger's mind for as long as they want to control the person. but, humans have a much better chance to resist this rather than humans. this is why varymyr was forced into one of his wolves, because his current human form was dying, and he chose this individual (not naming names) to put himself into. this person killed him while trying to resist him, and he was forced to put himself into one of his familiars.

i was pretty excited to see them split book 3 into two seasons. i couldnt fathom them trying to fit that book into a single season.. it only gets more complicated, more characters get introduced, and more pivotal plot points arise more often.

also, if you thought the first half of book 3 was intense, wait until the second half...

I really like this show, but no, I didn't.

Also, I hope they pay for some extras when it comes to a big battle scene instead of more "The city is yours, Khaleesi" type deals.

agreed. the various clans and tribes of wildlings that mance has gathered and united is in the hundreds of thousands.. not really shown as such in the show.

budget restrictions doe fam

There are plenty of battles to come I'm sure. The budget will continue to grow as more people become fans of the show.

I understand the budget restrictions thing but one would have thought HBO would have taken 'battle scenes' (and the cost of making them) into consideration when commissioning the show.

I think 'Rome' got cancelled partly because they couldn't afford the extras for the battle scenes. All i'm saying is I hope they don't fuck this up too.
