It's not unusual, far from it, it's actually quite normal. Google Kitty Genovese and diffusion of responsibility and you'll see how shit humans are :(

yeah people are cowards
only ever had one potentially bad situation, just sitting outside front of mates house in london blazin, and then all of sudden theres about six guys just come into the gate and surround us, only managed to get back inside cos some brave woman intervened, distracting them momentarily
