I blame Mumford & Sons for convincing people that folk music was somehow cool again.

Eon have had the same 2 Mumford and sons songs as their hold music for ages and I'm constantly having to call them because of my work. One of them is that shite sweet heart song, one of the most irritating things ever created

I was just about to post this.

Folk music is, was and always will be cool, but it's got to fit with the zeitgeist when it's created or it is by-definition, not folk music. Mumford & Sons don't make folk music; they make poorly researched nostalgia-core from the salvaged scrap of once-vital folk movements for stnuc who want their mates in 6th Form to think their cultured.

Sorry, yes...meant the modern day interpretation of folk, not the classic stuff.

I think the complete and utter misinterpretation of the word Folk is even more annoying than what happened to the word Indie. Folk music has changed generation by generation since the dawn of time to reflect the common themes and experiences of the day as told through the medium of the most ubiquitous instruments and styles; it's been created on everything from lutes to electronic instruments... but at some point during the 90s, it got frozen in time in the 60s and now everyone thinks Folk Music is what people who can't admit Woodstock finished 30 years before they were born make with instruments they've had kicking around since their Grandad's estate got divvied up. Folk isn't supposed to add its own aesthetic, it's supposed to be a fucking mirror. My generation's folk music probably shouldn't agree with my parents' generation's folk music.

Pete Seeger made folk music. Woodie Guthrie made folk music. Bruce Springsteen made folk music. Hell, Mike Skinner made folk music... Tupac definitely made folk music.

Mumford & Sons just make mugs of music journalists.

the skinner one is a bulls eye tbh

the tupac suggestion is completely wrong though but there's an angle there imo
