In other words, I realize that Mala wasn't forced into making this album by an means, but obviously these tunes were authored under much different circumstances than all his other released music. I wonder how this album would sound if it were to come out on Deep Medi. Do you think it would sound the exact same or slightly different?
Im pretty sure he made the album first before looking for somewhere to put it out on. He wouldnt have spoke to Brownswood and been like "I will make an album for you to put out"

Being on Deep Medi it wouldnt of been any different.. The whole point of this album is Mala curating a sound he based on his travels. Still don't understand why people are saying stuff like "Not the usual Mala stuff..." It was never going to be that in the first place...

the whole project was initiated by gilles peterson, so i guess it was pretty clear from the start that the album would be released on brownswood.

yeah, this.

i still think it's cool how organically the whole thing happened. from the looks of it, gilles and mala just went to cuba, hung out with some locals, and they just sort of vibed off eachother and ended up with some cool stuff. to me, that's really the essence of music - inspiration and creativity in its purest form.

Mala, to me, doesn't seem like the type of person that would let his creative output be altered by any sort of outside pressures. He's going to make the music that he feels compelled to make. And if you knew Gilles Peterson, he isn't the type of person who would put that kind of pressure on Mala, let alone any musician. This project isn't the result of being released on a different label, it's solely a result of Mala's opportunity to have been exposed to a very different culture - one which clearly inspired him deeply.

Yeah... and he said in an interview the idea was initially just to meet up with some artists and see what happened, he never went there with the intention of actually releasing anything, an album was just a product of what happened over there. I'd say there was absolutely no pressure whatsoever.

tbh I'm not sure about 'The Tunnel'. It's a fairly good dubstep tune but it's just not what I was expecting, it's more like a DMZ banger. Doesn't seem very Cuban influenced. I guess I'm just struggling with the context of it. Perhaps it will make total sense when I listen to the album as a whole.

These 2 tracks are exclusive to this piece of vinyl and will not be included in the Mala in Cuba 4 piece vinyl box set.
also, please tell me one dubstep album that contains a tune on the vinyl version, which has been released as a vinyl single beforehand.

i knew someone would do that. but you still get the idea, it's very uncommon. ;-)
and apart from that it has been mentioned several times in this thread.
