Can't be arsed to quote Wolf89's bit about it, but sampling and covering is completely different. Or more importantly, sampling-without-permission and covering-without-permission are quite different. Usually sampling is not done with the intention of passing on the music as your own, it's done to add to a track you've made while referencing the work or as an homage to the original music (this is more in reference to tracks that are built around the sample). In hip-hop, nobody is expecting people to believe you made that famous James Brown record the rapper is spitting on. Kind of struggling to make my point here, but i'll just say this (and it's probably an unpopular opinion) but sampling is an art-form, sly-covers-without-perimission-and-no-credit is bullshit.

DJ Shadow's 'Entroducing' is a prime example. 100% samples from various records spanning years - hailed as one of the best albums of our time, and I'd tend to agree. Timeless classic - probably because despite taking a couple of years to make (I'm guessing), it actually took decades for all the parts to become available, or to be written by other artists. It's a beautiful audio collage and I, for one, fully endorse the idea of hip-hop being an art form.

Maybe sometimes but Shadow's best work is far superior to anything Kid Koala's ever done

this, as well as being a part of deltron 3030...

koala is also a much better dj than shadow. i saw them both within a month last year and shadow was nothing in comparison

For sure, in terms of comparing back catalogues. Prefuse 73 is another level as Constrobuz fairly pointed out. So much groove and so much to say with his tunes.

DJ Krush absolutely destroys all though. Beat-making perfection, right there! 8)

The best pure-samples album ever made ever.

dont really see why one would compare prefuse 73 and dj shadow tbh

as for the kid koala comparison, i really like and appreciate what kid koala does, but you have to admit the formula hasnt changed much over the years whereas dj shadow's clearly explored new directions over the last albums (directions i don't always like btw but thats besides the point)

also except for dj krush, endtroducing (which isn't even shadow's first effort) predates all the names you guys brought up by at least 3/4 years, give the guy props for showing the way

and when it comes to djing, you guys should check out the mix dj shadow made in boiler room, a lesson in digging and djing imo
extra points for the balls of steel you need to play a classic rock set in boiler room

tl,dr: i'm a dj shadow fanboy, you people are heathen :6:
