Dubai didnt make its money from oil, its all from tourism and trading.
And, to be fair, i can see why you would see it as modern day slavery but if you knew what you were talking about youd know that those workers are paid so much more than they would ever have the opportunity to make, most of them are illiterate and from villages and would be poor and unemployed if they werent here.

except that they often go unpaid for months and can't do anything about it because they're stuck away from home and poor as shit. they also take away their passports... and despite that - the conditions they have to live in? atrocious. treat human beings with some dignity.

The government has a different approach to things, which is easy to take the piss out off if you live somewhere else but when i was living in Swansea, in town there was pretty consistent hostility, bare smack heads and fuck ups and not many career options. Because they dont take shit here and dont think anyone other than the locals are entitled to anything they dont work for it works better imo.

I'm related to sort-of-educated Pakistanis that work in Dubai and they just had a general disdain for the blatant islamic hypocrisy that goes on there. Because they're not uneducated labour, it is so much better for them then living in PK, though. I also have a rich uncle who went there normal and came back as a monster with Filipino nannies and shit. Probably not related to anything outlined, but it might be. Land of excess and that. I don't really respect powerful Arabs anyway.

It's not technically sharia here thank fuck, but it's just as bad.. And yeah the heat is an issue, the only thing I miss about living in the UK is being able to walk places, here everything is so far apart and it's just too hot.
