^ It's pretty much like that anywhere, and the point i was trying to make. When do you ever hear the term "free-speech" thrown about unless it's a defense for something the majority disagree with?

In fairness, the best way to let the world know how stupid people are is to let them open their mouth.

What would you propose as an alternative to free speech? I can't think of a sensible one

Alternative? Just do away with the whole silly argument.

Well tell me what "free speech" is actually good for and useful for, and then i can probably come up with an alternative. The reason i can't think of one is because the whole concept, that people are always fighting (sometimes literally) to defend, seems inherently pointless and trivial in today's societies.

How about being able to express your opinion without being criminalised

Like i said, in today's societies it's rather unnecessary - In a country where there is such a threat then chances are there's little you can do to curb it. So what's needed is action. Not some Kony 2012 bs, actual people doing actual things , not just expressing their opinions. Do something. Yes yes, awareness and that, but who actually buys into effective agendas if it's only words on a public platform?

I think there was the threat of being criminalized everywhere in the world at one point.
And i think your taking it a bit too dramatically, talking about Kony, even though I'm sure you were mocking.
I'm talking more along the lines of being able to openly express your beliefs etc without discrimination.

^ But that just brings us back to the point that only certain groups will be allowed "true" free speech. Even in progressive countries like, i dunno, Norway or some shit, i don't think they could tolerate mass non-violent campaigns of Neo-Nazism ideology, for example.
Selective free speech everywhere. Poor concept.

The only alternative I can think of would be to impose ideologies onto everyone and to somehow ban anything that deviates from that, sounds a but like equilibrium to me.
