Okay I've finally finished uploading the Skrillex one: http://www.mediafire.com/?s7vvazye73d1dst

Here's the KTN ableton file if you missed it: http://www.mediafire.com/?e5b2xq5pgqh16z2

Just spent the past hour going through these project files, very educational! I have to say this is the most helpful post i've seen, thanks! Really interesting to see how you went about making those sounds, and they're pretty spot on too.

Just a couple of questions - what was your process when you went about to make these sounds? Like in FM8, i've spent countless hours playing with it, but it seems almost as if there's no way of telling what sound i'll end up with. Yet in your patch, you have all of the operators modulating each other, how did you know to go about it that way?

Second question, where did you learn these skills? Any resources that you can recommend?

Thanks again, its nice when people share information like this, especially as these sounds have had many people stumped. Dubspot did a vid a while back and didn't even come close, yet when i look at it all laid out in Ableton it looks fairly straightforward. Awesome post.

The key of making "wet" growls, is to add a simple frequency shifter. 50/50 dry/wet, -35hz shift. You can play with those settings. It's great, but there is a problem. It works only for one note. For example, when you play note C it sounds good, but when you play F it sounds like you press F and F# at same time.

i don't understand, if it's a remix competition, don't they give you the stems to mix
what does synthesis have to do with it

these days i don't know what the hells going on

remixes these days entail taking a vocal or melody from the song and turning it into a whole new track. it's not just re-sequencing the song.

Some new sounds in this one: Soundcloud
Tried a little resampling once more after picking up up a couple of tips from seamless. It now seems alot easier then before, the trick is mostly to be patient. You wont get 'that sound' after 1 or 2 steps.

The hardest part of making a growl sound good is EQ. I can never get it right with growls, anybody have certain methods they use? It would be greatly appreciated! :D

Sick remix Jiclo, a worthy candidate, mind expanding a bit on the growls? the intro "brass" is that from a sample library?

thanks dude! the growls i can't remember 100% because i made em a while ago and bounced them, and just threw them into this project.
i do know i used FM8, just a simple gritty formant sound, then lots of resampling, ableton's amp, simple eq automation for the vowel movement, and EQing to give it the right shape.
maybe some fabfilter saturn too.
finally shaack audio transient shaper's drive knob to maximize and get it damn loud after all that EQ work.

the intro brass is kontakt's factory brass ensemble, layered, distorted, resampled, sausage fattened, EQ'd, widened with ozone 5 imager, and again maximized to shit.

before you do any EQ automating, try to have the growl have a pretty even spectrum, except with higher 1-3khz content and maybe some 100-300 hz phatness. i usually cut at 500-1000hz. sounds good.

THEN, once you have enough harmonic content, use an EQ and automate from 50~100 to 600-1000hz with a 10-15 db bell boost with Q of your choice.

then id probably continue EQ shaping it, parallel processing it with stuff like vintage exciter, psp vintagewarmer or even noveltech character (which is fucking amazing for shaping bass and lead sounds)

and resampling until it sounds good.
