You really think the only thing that comes in team form is nationalism?

no

too much emphasis is on taking part.

kids at grade school getting a medal just for running the race

weve become a society that celebrates mediocrity

what phig is saying applies more to places that already have some underlying national/ethnic w/e conflict

yes because it only validates capitalist institutions and restricts individual interests to whatever is profitable

tbh djoes point is mute.. I mean its fine .. but the logic behind it is worked out by a person that hasn't spent time with the kid in question yet..

I'm sure at 2 or 3 you can already sort of see if the kid will be into sports or not..

ofcourse if they dont like football you'd have to force it on them.. only problem with that is that we can't do that to adults ............yet! :6:

i get that making competitiveness an intrinsic quality in a person could do that. but i thnk its a bit of a stretch to apply that to someone wanting to be better at a sport than someone else

overt competetiveness tho if it shows in a person can be one of the most irritating attributes someone might have. IMO it's sort of a sign of maturity if you can admit defeat and not take every damn little game or whatever so seriously

that post was meant to be mostly tongue in cheek (I thought the last part of my post might make it more obvious but I guess not)

Im not anti-sports and I don't think really that's the "only purpose" it serves, but I do think there's some truth to it. it's obviously not the only "team oriented" form of organization in society, but I'd say it's definitely the most significant

Chomsky has a good quote on this where he says basically the same thing, I'm on my phone rn though

obvs depends on each individual's psychological traits, and on the parents too
