playing ball in the park was soooo good. I suck at football but it never mattered. it was all about being away from the parents and get dirty. we would play with friends, none of that competitive team bs; nobody out of our group ever joined an institutionalised sports team... I think with very performance-centred sports like athletics, figure skating or ballet might come a potentially unhealthy focus on competition, yes, but less so when it's just a couple of kids playing footie in the streets.

I went generally out around the countryside doing whatever, like general exploration, climbing trees, playing various games along the lines of 50 50 in woods/moors etc. I also learned guitar, played video games and started skateboarding just before my teens. Very rarely played football. I think you're over estimating the amount of football that kids have to have to not be bored.
This while competitiveness is bad, sport is nationalism talk is all for utter sissies though

My parents were crazy about me needing to be outside all the time even tho I'd rather play videogames most of the time
Another m8s mum was the same so the two of us would spend days just walking about, finding like places we could climb on/sneak into/whatever while we waited to come back inside and play james bond nightfire on gamecube
I'm thankful for that shit now cus I don't wanna be someone who can't make their own fun/bitches all the time about being outside/being cold. But 80% of the time back then I'd rather have been inside really.
