almostskate100: drops got no punch to it, try filling out the frequency spectrum a little more. sub needs some character (mids)... either that or try filling things out with the percussion. cool rythym overall, just needs some fine tuning imo

captain: sounds pretty muddy, mids are drowning everything out. synths are kind of ear piercing, need to mix those sounds down a little more.

mthrfnk: quality is nice! well developed elements man! even though the tune isn't quite what i would listen to personally, im into it. second build is dope! its hard for me to give critisism on this one, only suggestion is bring out the top end of the snare/clap a little more

budspencertron: i think the mids are a little overwhelming, even slightly muddy. percussion is a little quiet. well structured though! half time section is awesome! nice work!

heres my latest, please be extremely critical if possible! i really have no one to bounce ideas off of, which sucks!

sample was tight fitted too! But you could make your
kick sound a litle bit harder (Snare too). Ooh I also
liked alot the breakdown part @2min with the dark
ambient in background, was original.

woow Im seriously impressed if this is your
first electronic producing attempt! Sure a lot of
things need to be fixed on your song, but I liked
your "Woho" sample, your build up is pretty good too.
You just need to learn sidechaining and play around
with the EQ, and you should get something better.

Your tune got a litle something "Angelique" I
liked it alot actually, the mix with the kinda "harp"
and "violin" is sublime. The voice could be lowered down
a litle bit in the beginning (My advice). Actually
@0.45s the build up is pretty good! But your tune would
be sick with a fatter and clearer OSC in the drop, nice
job overall.

that it would be great if your kick was even
more Sub-bassed, you could also put some part of the
ambient somewhere in the main beat, would be cool.

Hey guys,

Anybody have an idea how I can make the sound fatter and more tight?
I'm really trying to mix everthing in all kind of directions but it's all just getting weirder.

I want it to feel fatter without feeling as gritty/muddy as it does now.

Anyone have an idea? I know which sound I want I just don't know how to get there. :/

4rantare.. you said why it doesn't sound the way you want.. just need to compress and eq everything for the tightness .. as for a fatter sound , just throw maximus on it and fruity blood overdrive, if you use fl .. if not then just layer that sound and mix it downn..

well, im no dubstep pro. so its abit hard to me to comment things to be approved on other peoples project when they are all quite better then mine.

@captain Loved the track, the only thing i disliked was the vocals in the intro. i thought it might be abit much. but they sound epic in the main part!

@Living tragedy Even if its short, and coming from someone who doesnt know alot dubstep, i loved the synths. (sound/arranging)

Well this is the result of day 2. took in what you guys had to say and tried to improve it abit. The track stops abit random, but thats where i have gotten.
i made the intro abit longer, and tried to make some changes in the main part so it wouldnt get that repeative. Still might be, im not sure =/
eq and stuff is abit hard, im only on poor quality headphones. but atleast it sounds decent in them! So looking forward the hear how it sounds for you guys.
Ps. this track might be abit high in volum, so i advice to turn the sound down abit!

@ dougriley ---> Diggin' the deep dark vibes man! Try off setting your synth a little to give it a stagger vibe??? Try messing with that sound @ 0:26 seconds more as well. It makes for a good roll.

@ Paradoxx ---> Nice sample cuttin', but I need something slightly more redundant to latch on to and get down. Really try to put as much work into the sub bass as you do your main synth.

@ Klesherdubs ---> Ooooh yesss, Lovin' the feel man. To give it more of an off beat pull back, try and sample one " 1/4 wob" and reverse it as audio and you'll find that it makes for a great swing.

Thought I'd give Drumstep a try. Criticize me to bits. Thanks!!!

@The Other Drug: The kick (mainly) / snare sound really muddy in the mix, with most of it, it sounds as though they have no highs, liking the ideas though, sounding really good especially that air raid siren, works really well I think. That breakdown is really sick especially where she says "exhale" and it changes again, liking the ideas a lot, I just feel like it could be polished up somewhat

@Udyret: Liking that weird sound created with the synths, I can't help but think the kicks / snare could have more high end and be a bit louder / punchier. The drop sounds pretty good, but I feel like it could still be polished again in the mix. I would say it needs more high end especially, but that might just be my headphones

@Paradoxx: Sounds alright, but personally I think it could do with the snares / kicks bringing up a lot, with way more high end (again more highs on synths), and personally I feel like it's a bit 'bare', maybe try adding some hats to add some flow etc?




Okay, here's mine, it's essentially a better mixed copy of the one I posted earlier, tips on how to improve the mix would be REALLY appreciated!

Creepy intro vibes! I really like the instrumentation but i hate that kick - it has a weird pop that doesn't suit the rest of the track imo - the rest is great tho!

Use a better snare sample, something that punches right through. I think your side chaining needs a quicker release so theres less of a rhythmic ducking. Hats are too low - you need some more stuff going on up top.

Liking the arp and all the delays / reverbs in the intro. Maybe filter out some of the sounds before the drop to give it more impact?

Liking this a lot but the bass sounds like its missing a lot of the mid - it's very tinny. You've got a great structure here tho and some good samples etc…

I'm not a fan of that snare - it might be ok in the intro but when you actually want to drive the track it needs to be much more powerful. There are also times when a 4 to the floor kick pattern might work better.


Right - so i've been fucking about with this knife party remix for a few weeks. It wasn't feeling right so I started it again yesterday. Much happier with this one already. Would love thoughts.

@VirusTi - i hear some clipping maybe go through all your solo channels and notch out the really sharp freq
- try some sidechaining on your snare and bassdrum too so they cut easier through the mix
- definitly watch those high freq and try to make more room for the sub
- arrangement is good so take your time for mixing now

@danimal - 3rd bar loops or w/e gets annoying, very nice intro..DRUMS ARE SOOOO LOUD try eqing things so they sit a bit more properly, keep the idea going though.

@hudson - Very nice and chilled, gets a bit repitive towards the end though!

@cubicle - Everything is nice until the piano, very dry sounding piano but like where the tune is going!

Not really fan of the lead sound, it sounds too thin to me. Cool pad going on, gives the track some emotion.
The drop is cool, you got some serious weight going on. The growls are on point.
I would add some percussion, to give the track some extra energy, that would be cool. Overall, nice work!

@dubby_rdam sounds good , i really dig the feel of this track. the only thing i would say is that your kick seems a bit loud compared to everything else - it has a long enough tail too that it makes it a bit difficult to hear the leads you have. Might try either bringing em down a bit or taking down the decay.

@Clodmeister - honestly your track is so all over the place it is hard to tell what you intentionally put in there and what the frequency you are hearing is. If you are talking about the static at the beginning try throwing some gates on whatever tracks you have active then and it should help get rid of it.

@ BudSpencertron - man the bass line you have sounds awesome - nice job on the sound/part. I really like the parts from 1:00-1:20. What synth did you use to make your bass if you dont mind me asking? The only feedback i can give you about improving it is that It seems like it is lacking presence - maybe give the mid bass some stereo width? I feel like the kick could use a bit more bite as well.

@Burgeamon - it seems like your levels are a bit off - i might try turning down the vocals a bit and turning up some of your leads and your drums. I think your build would be alot more effective for example if your riser was a bit more prominent.

@ VirusTI - your drums could be brough forward in the mix a bit. Your snare seems to have a really long tail with alot of white noise at the end - it might clear up your mix some to take down the decay on it. I think some more variation in the drum patterns would help give it some more energy as well.


Here is the track i have been working on, it is the first time i have tried making an electro-house track so some feedback would be extremely helpful.

thanks man was a albino two saw waves detuned then some tal filter 2 with bandpass i used two in a row so i switched between them both end with bandpass to zero again so the transition is not that obvious some distortion before the filter and i think one minimal distortion after the filter
yeah i agree with the kick maybe i find one short banging one to layer or replace the current one

Thanks for getting back to me at least and I should have explained somethings at first, but yea its not even at 140 bpm and I made it really wonky on purpose so I doubt it can even be considered as dubstep. The fizz at the beginning was intentional, and I was referring to the part where it drops, at 31 secs. its got a wierd ripping noise sound under the bass which i want to get rid off, which was a formanted and a bit detuned squarewave, with sub underneath if that helps.

Also there I think there is enough frequency room between my sub and the bassline, the sub cuts off at 90 hz and the bass starts at a around 130 or so. The problem came about when I started trying to limit the tune.

Those growly synths are really nice and those clicky kicks are perfect. The only thing i would say is that there seems to be sort of a "gap" in your mix in the mid range so maybe turn up your pads or something . Overall though I think you have a great track once its finished .

@Budspecteron That is the sexiest crunchy sounding reese bass i have heard in a while, its refreshing too because it dosent sound like transformers grinding on each other Your mix is brilliant too everything comes though and is punchy.

@VirusTI Im not a fan of the snare drum, in my opinions its too much like white noise and has too much release and not enough low end on it to hold its punchiness (If that's what you were going for). Have you limited the master because it sounds like its being squashed within an ounce of its life and I think something is clipping at about 1.34 as well so you may need to turn it down . The musical ideas are all there though so you just gotta tweak it

Heres my latest thing that I started two days ago and never really had much time to spend on it, should be more stuff coming in the future now that im done with exams

You mean the clicking noise like @ 0:36, or the buzz around your kicks? Did you add any compression when you mastered it? For the clicking noise - if you have any compression on your master channel id try turning it off and seeing if you still hear it. I would think the buzz on your kick has either got to be your kick clipping or the attack/decay settings on something you are side chaining to it .
