i think fedorism in clothing is fundamentally about wearing something that's more or less a costume, and not actual clothing, you know? Like, you have a fetish for a certain style because you want to fantasize about being a character in some way.

For what we call "fedoras" this is more noticable, because they want to attach a sense of traditional "classy" masculinity to themselves by poorly dressing up as some kind of smokey bar, smooth talking 50's caricature, even though they're into anime and are sad people who are the opposite of that character. But really, it's similarly sad when you see some white bloke in an a$ap rocky uniform, who waves his hands around like chief keef & squad do in music videos when my niqqa comes on at the house party.

In both cases, it's trying to fit a fantasy into real life, which is just fundamentally sad and cringeworthy.

At what point do you just think something is cool, and what point do you start being a fake and a fetishist? And being a fetishist isn't just bad cus others (others who dont share your exact fantasy anyway) shake their heads at you, it's bad because living like that is excruciating.

i have wondered this exact question before

at the night I went to a couple times back in Oslo everyone was gunfingering when pulse x or skeng or similar tunes dropped too. That way it's easier to not feel weird about that. Is it still internal fantasy, just maintained by a crowd of people who all have it though?

i think you're articulating it just fine actually and i completely agree with you. although, i don't think skanking with your hands in the air is a fundamentally fake thing to do. that was my natural reaction to dubstep before i knew people did "gunfingers" in the uk. maybe if you do it exactly like the benga gif every time skeng goes on then yeah but skanking out to dubstep is not fake.

however, i've seen this happen in america - people at dubstep nights or just people that are really into it are starting to say words/phrases like "long time" or "big up" and others that they never would have said if they didn't pick it up from the uk dubstep people.

however, so much of the culture of dubstep in the first place and a lot of british slang was taken from jamaica anyway so it's not like the british are exempt from it either.

this discussion is also uncomfortably related to why this scene is so into vinyl. Are the arguments pro vinyl at the end of the day convincing? A lot of it seems to be for the purpose of replicating the 90's experience even though ironically that attempt shoots itself in the foot a bit, because (ostensibly) the 90's underground experience *was* authentic, whereas the culture of 300 WHITE LABEL LIMITED PRINT RUN isn't, somehow.

I think about this a lot. How far does it extend? I remember mason had a laugh when Wen's album press release came out. "Wen isn't from the roads though is he" he said. Is it part of the fetish and fantasy when those roadman samples are used in his tunes? Is he trying to make us squint and pretend the tunes live in a slightly different cultural time and place, not from dubstepforum enthusiasts, but from the mysterious, menacing and cool london tower blocks? TBF Wen isn't on DSF, but I feel like more online-savvy nerd-ravers than roadmen pass his tunes around.

Or is it just an honest appreciation and shoutout to the music that did come more from those types of environments, which is the main influence on his sound?

it just goes back to the classic discussion about whether anything is truly original. the people that claim to be hipsters (or at least act and dress like them) are not original, and if you talk to them about why they do whatever niche thing that they do, you will realize pretty quickly that they are imitating something that they think is "cool". in the end it just comes down to whether or not the human mind is capable of producing truly original thoughts. like, all of the thoughts that you think are a product of the things you've experienced and learned throughout your time on earth. you only speak english or norweigan because you heard other people speaking it. and i don't know the answer to that question (if humans are capable of true originality), so yeah it's pointless to dwell on it.

my solution is to just be myself and not give a shit about trying to be this or that or whatever. i dress how i want to dress and listen to the music i want to listen to and do the things i wanna do. if they happen to overlap with certain fads then that's fine, and if they don't then that's fine too. i don't really pay attention to it.
