Scale Only wrote: James Blake vs Kode9 - Kode9 was good, but I was disappointed with James Blake. I suppose DJing isn't really his line of expertise, but he tried a couple of things (I'm looking at you, Ms Jackson/Love What Happened Here mashup) which just didn't work at all. There was one point where he did some weird sound manipulation and I started to get a bit trippy and hear distant noises, but I can't work out if that was the music or the heat.
Loefah - I've always liked Loefah, but never got a real emotional response from his music. I was hoping tonight would be the night, but I had to go and stand at the back for a bit to cool off, so probably didn't get much of a chance.
Skream & Benga

Going into more detail on Skream & Benga, I've seen them before and loved them. But it was an incredibly boring set. I'm not going to pontificate about how they're not being true to themselves or the spirit of DMZ, because I don't think either of those are helpful concepts for the progression of the scene, but it was very disappointing, given what they have at their disposal. It's weird as well, as soon as they busted out the 'stuff for which they've been criticised', the entire front of the crowd suddenly seemed full of bald steroid-pumping topless teenagers, gurning away. I hadn't seen any of them before all night. I'm sure that brand of dubstep just conjours them out of thin air. But either way, it definitely didn't fit. And nor did the dancier stuff they did for me. There was a new exclusive Skream dubplate that sounded like a late-90s Ibiza tune - horrible.

One of the teenagers apparently had some kind of Messianic complex and jumped on stage and started conducting the crowd. Wouldn't have minded so much, but he stayed up for Youngsta until he was eventually shouted at enough to get down and sort his life out. :|

Overall, pretty good vibe. Fair few tits flailing their arms about in tight spaces and taking the direct route to the front without considering anyone else, but that's standard club fare I suppose.

Certainly very glad I went.

Fuckin' chuuune! Been listening for days to it, and to hear it live :6: :o :Q: :u:
Goth trad & Vivek = big set! woah :U:
Tend to disagree with the Loefah dislikes, absolutely loved his sets, but the one in Amsterdam felt bigger and even more stupidly nice! Djeez Loefah, killed it there!
Too bad about the technical problems, would have loved to see youngsta and kryptic (loved their set in Belgium), never saw youngsta before and he was on a good roll/vibe until the unfortunate event, still a shame he didn't continue in the other room... Moxie smashed it there! Was standing front row room 1 all the time (dudes if you stand front row, move or gtfo, don't stand still with such vibez!!!! what's wrong with u guys?) except for Skream & Benga (djeez moshing in Amsterdam :/ wasn't much better here I must say, I just hate moshpits especially such a massive one, what's the fun in pushing people around with the chance of hurting them (badly)) but went to see Moxie and :o lovelay I must say! Well to each their own, if some like it, fine by me I went to see Moxie, but it still is DMZ night no, didn't expect it (maybe in Amsterdam because Dutch people are fucked up [quoted from many a Dutch friend] when it comes to partying) and was hoping for something different! Especially when I could have stayed home to hear Bass canon (circus record night @ 10 kilometres from where I live). Did like one tune very very much though, where those narsty bits are well put together and not irritating the crap out of me! Don't know how the tune is called but it was a nice 1 Skreams "filth" (not the song filth but the style) and wow @ the subs on that 1! Stayed a bit to hear that one again :o , the other tunes that I've heard were great as well! Didn't want nostalgia, just didn't feel it but hey that's me, no hate just :U:
edit; he did have me skanking out in Amsterdam! Massive things.
Didn't like room 2 after Moxie to be fair, was ok but heard those things before (way too many times)

Oh yeah, get off stage! And someone else, please stop shouting, u ain't no MC and I wanna hear the music not your voice! I don't care how you spend your skank/night but don't irritate others with it please :)
That being said; if I offended someone (I was the tall sweaty guy in black @ front) I'm truly sorry btw, never was my intention in any way (don't know if I did, hope not but just in case).

Chef & Joe Nice (one legged skank haha Pokes makin' jokez), big things! DMZ also, different from Amsterdam, liked it better! (although no "night" :D). Fucking gutted I missed Distance again for the 4th time, him being my fav producer and all :( damn :( also a shame I didn't go to see Horsepower/Zed Bias/Teeth, anyone care for an update on those sets? Chunky, great MC dude! Making sure those positive vibez get spread - 1 finger salute to you sir!-

The heat was mad too damn, especially when you've slept for 1 hour since Friday mornin' went to Amsterdam (love that grass :U: ) party there, went back, went to London and party there, ugh legs were killin' me, but I couldn't stop moving :corndance: and no grass found in UK (sober skanking o.O been a while since I've done that!), also don't throw bottles of beer (mate got one against the head @ the beginning) that's just ....

Absolutely loved the system!
Lovely how so many producers were present, didn't have the guts to say to Lost/Distance how much I like their tunes (very shy and easily embarrassed :() Buying a t-shirt from DMZ Bday of the hands of mr. Pokes o.O didn't expect that!

Now I'm going to catch some sleep and I'm poor now :(

no offence/disrespect intended to anyone mentioned btw but still can't believe people stood still?

edit: lol just reading the Skream beef /me takes back his words, sorry for opinions! Just being jealous I guess... Ugh anyway no hate intended lol I hate rage/hate.

Last night became one of the hottest and sweatiest dances I been in for a while. Due to those conditions… (and playing dubplates) the moisture made it almost impossible at times.

After dmz in Amsterdam Friday and our Birthday Bash last night, I'm truly rinsed. Its Been a proper lazy Sunday..... All about the Big Roast!

Next dmz is Saturday 7th May.

Rest well and until next time!

"The bald FWD guy" is at every DMZ. Usually the first to properly start shocking out.

first DMZ, thought it was a good night .. only things that annoyed me was the capacity, about 3-4 dickheads walking round with their tops off barging past everyone and starting shit .. and then some mug who came up to me at the bar "get me a barcardi now you bumbaclart" .. do one mate.. 2 mates who came with me enjoyed it despite passing out for half the night

I love a DMZ birthday, but why why are Tunnidge and Distance always playing first - it's so annoying I miss them everytime!

didnt even realise there was another thread about the whole internet beef over the reactions to skream and bengas set.

i think ppl rip into them a bit too hard and try to analyse shit too much. if your not feeling just go elsewhere, thats what the other rooms there for. if there are people dancing to what their playing, whats the problem? thats all that matters really, whatever they play regardless of your personal perception, if the crowds feeling it and giving a reaction then you can't complain about them as dj's cos they did nothing wrong.

Not surprised that Goth-trad and Vivek got set of the night based on what goth-trad played in Dam the night before which was absolutely sick.

To be fair, Skream and Benga are ridiculously good. It's up to them what they play, their big for a reason.

But the issue was some of the stuff they played would have been the right material for a slightly different night.

but then again
Skream and Benga at the 5th Birthday were ridiculously good.

Re: the whole Skream/Benga set hate campaign...

If your problem with it is that the tunes they played aren't in keeping with DMZ tradition...you could say the same for Kode 9 & Loefah. But noone is. Therefore...give it a rest.

I'm not a 'brostepper' and their set wasn't my kinda thing...but baiting them online is a little silly. The night was immense, now lets move on.

Yeah was just thinking this myself, after what I had written in the other thread. However I'd say that they had closer tie's to the DMZ sound than the 'brostep'. My thinking is that the stuff Loefah and Kode 9 played also relys on the bass weight and musical elements, where-as the 'Brostep' doesnt so much. I wasnt there myself and havent even watched the stream yet, so I guess i shouldnt be commenting but I have and just expressing my opinions.

People saying tunes didn't fit the DMZ vibe are talking out of their arses, sorry, but it is true.

The only thing I've ever known DMZ to be pinned down by is their slogan "come meditate on bass weight". Skream and Bengas set had plenty of it. I'd also like to concur with whoever mentioned the fact James Blake and Kode9 aren't being called out for supplying sets that differed from the "dmz vibe". Its a dance celebrating the experimental side of bass music sub-cultures and all facets of the experimentation were covered in my opinion.

My verdict: Far too busy, way to hot to be enjoyable, no space to skank, no red stripe or cans in general and the que took the piss. Despite this...

Goth-Trad and VIVEK were fucking immense, the room wasnt too busy at this point so i could have a dance. The two complimented each other briliantly, Viveks eyes down low slung bassweight and Goth Trads percussion and synths. Bablyon Fall is silly big! Last tune from VIVEK was big aswell.

Kode 9 dropping regulate was wicked.

Loefah was alright, im feeling some of the tunes he plays, namely the Ramadanman type beats with nice snare patterns, Addisson Groove and the instra:mental / boddika bits that just stand out. Some of its a bit too housey for me, just not really my thing but good to hear things being pushed forward for sure. I would have liked to have heard him drop a couple of classics to break up the set a bit, thro in root or something.

I left about 30 mins into DMZ set, it was WAY to hot and sweaty in room 1, just got unbearable, especially cause they only had one deck. I havnt been since they changed the decks to the other side of the room either and tbh i wasnt feeling it, there just isnt as much interaction with the DJ.

The crowd was so much younger than the other DMZ's ive been to. Seemed to be tons of 18-19 yr olds (not that thats necessarily a bad thing, although in this case it made for a totally different vibe imo), and loads of gurners. Also got offerd MD about 5 times which has never happened to me at DMZ before. It was like a full on rave whereas, for me, DMZ has never been a rave.

All in all, despite Goth Trad and VIVEK being sick, i honestly cant justify hitting the birthday again. Travelling down from brum, queing from 8:30 - 10:30 to get in and then spending the night sweating my bolloxs off even though i didnt have space to dance and having a constant stream of people barging past me just isnt the one. I left dissapointed.

I think for the birthdays they need paper tickets to cut down the que and might even need to move venue if its going to be like that again.

The only 'tradition' there's ever been at DMZ is to appreciate and enjoy bass music on a heavy rig. I guess the backlash against the 'brostep' is from people who recognise that that sort of music attracts people to the dance that don't necessary hold those values, and therefore detract from what the night is about (subjective though that may be).

There is no harm in going mental to tunes that are getting dropped, no one objects to that and certainly not me cos I'm no hypocrite. What people take issue to is when you get those people who crave a bit of attention, especially when loaded up or whatever, getting a little overexcited and doing things that can fuck up the night for other people. Music has a power to influence people, and is therefore partially responsible for what goes on in the dance, which in turn forms the 'vibe'. Yes I'm over thinking it but it's either this or get on with an essay :6:

(Yeah I'm basically just pissed that Yunx vs KM got disrupted because of that FUCKING water bottle and whoever threw it)

I agree, it generally hasn't been as fun since they moved the decks. I usually prefer standing under the aircond vents the whole night, with the old set up that was relatively close to the decks. With the new set-up it's miles away. But for the birthday night, I think it was actually a good thing in terms of people movement coz you always just ended up with a block of people squished up by the doors with the old arrangement. It was almost impossible to get into the room without barging through. You still had to squeeze up to get inside this year but at least it wasn't necessarily as disruptive. Tropical heat notwithstanding.

Hatman needs to calm down!! even if he's not wearing a hat.

I think the main difference is that SOME of the tunes that were classed as 'brostep' were just bad music. Anyone who produces to an average level would probably argue that.
BUT, i left before that started so I cant really comment. Just dont like to see a divide in dmz, it should be a place where the real bass heads unite.

i do love how some people on twitter have now started slating the '2005' generation tho, that was just uncalled for, surely DMZ is the one place the deep 'coma-step' heads belong!!!
(coma-step is not my term, its from the twitter beef)
