Scale Only wrote: James Blake vs Kode9 - Kode9 was good, but I was disappointed with James Blake. I suppose DJing isn't really his line of expertise, but he tried a couple of things (I'm looking at you, Ms Jackson/Love What Happened Here mashup) which just didn't work at all. There was one point where he did some weird sound manipulation and I started to get a bit trippy and hear distant noises, but I can't work out if that was the music or the heat.
Loefah - I've always liked Loefah, but never got a real emotional response from his music. I was hoping tonight would be the night, but I had to go and stand at the back for a bit to cool off, so probably didn't get much of a chance.
Skream & Benga
Going into more detail on Skream & Benga, I've seen them before and loved them. But it was an incredibly boring set. I'm not going to pontificate about how they're not being true to themselves or the spirit of DMZ, because I don't think either of those are helpful concepts for the progression of the scene, but it was very disappointing, given what they have at their disposal. It's weird as well, as soon as they busted out the 'stuff for which they've been criticised', the entire front of the crowd suddenly seemed full of bald steroid-pumping topless teenagers, gurning away. I hadn't seen any of them before all night. I'm sure that brand of dubstep just conjours them out of thin air. But either way, it definitely didn't fit. And nor did the dancier stuff they did for me. There was a new exclusive Skream dubplate that sounded like a late-90s Ibiza tune - horrible.
One of the teenagers apparently had some kind of Messianic complex and jumped on stage and started conducting the crowd. Wouldn't have minded so much, but he stayed up for Youngsta until he was eventually shouted at enough to get down and sort his life out.![]()
Overall, pretty good vibe. Fair few tits flailing their arms about in tight spaces and taking the direct route to the front without considering anyone else, but that's standard club fare I suppose.
Certainly very glad I went.
honestly the best event I've been to so far throughout all genres, atmosphere was completely different from anything else. v much appreciate the efforts putting it all together.mala wrote:Just a quick one to say Thank You to everyone that came, from both near and far to make dmz what it is. I truly feel everyone plays an important part.
Last night became one of the hottest and sweatiest dances I been in for a while. Due to those conditions… (and playing dubplates) the moisture made it almost impossible at times.
After dmz in Amsterdam Friday and our Birthday Bash last night, I'm truly rinsed. Its Been a proper lazy Sunday..... All about the Big Roast!
Next dmz is Saturday 7th May.
Rest well and until next time!

Yeah was just thinking this myself, after what I had written in the other thread. However I'd say that they had closer tie's to the DMZ sound than the 'brostep'. My thinking is that the stuff Loefah and Kode 9 played also relys on the bass weight and musical elements, where-as the 'Brostep' doesnt so much. I wasnt there myself and havent even watched the stream yet, so I guess i shouldnt be commenting but I have and just expressing my opinions.herbalicious wrote:Re: the whole Skream/Benga set hate campaign...
If your problem with it is that the tunes they played aren't in keeping with DMZ tradition...you could say the same for Kode 9 & Loefah. But noone is. Therefore...give it a rest.
I'm not a 'brostepper' and their set wasn't my kinda thing...but baiting them online is a little silly. The night was immense, now lets move on.
I agree, it generally hasn't been as fun since they moved the decks. I usually prefer standing under the aircond vents the whole night, with the old set up that was relatively close to the decks. With the new set-up it's miles away. But for the birthday night, I think it was actually a good thing in terms of people movement coz you always just ended up with a block of people squished up by the doors with the old arrangement. It was almost impossible to get into the room without barging through. You still had to squeeze up to get inside this year but at least it wasn't necessarily as disruptive. Tropical heat notwithstanding.wooda916 wrote:I left about 30 mins into DMZ set, it was WAY to hot and sweaty in room 1, just got unbearable, especially cause they only had one deck. I havnt been since they changed the decks to the other side of the room either and tbh i wasnt feeling it, there just isnt as much interaction with the DJ.
