How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Thing is, none of these attempts has been processed by a mastering house... unlike SMANS. I know mastering doesn't make a shit sound golden, but it will certainly help.
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Sorry but people were mean to me saying that my growls sounding nothing like scary monsters. So I gotta keep at this.
I made this pretty quickly and I'm beginning to get into this fm ssound design. I'll keep making attempts at this.

This entire thread is the problem with this forum.
Allow the thread.
But 27 pages and it's the same conversations and insults from the first page.
Think about it for a sec.
A forum should be about experimentation.
So copy this sound and learn sound design.
But don't continually insult folks who don't come close and don't come in here insulting others because you feel your sound is the closest.
People need to learn to be more humble.

i understand the first statement.. a little common sense but i can't speak for everyone. i know on my part i can't contribute atm but as soon as I can i will.Electric_Head wrote:Why don't you guys work on the sound together rather than doing this whole one-up thing?

and who are you to say what a forum should be about? please don't back seat mod even tho you are a respectable user on this forum. i don't mean to sound hypocritical, promising that my next post will be contributing to this thread.
edit: you can't say this entire thread had been no help for anyone... there had definitely been some gradual progress from page 1 up until now overall

I was talking about the way the thread and the contributors interact.
I have no issue with the thread or the premise.
Where did I say it has been no help?
Once again, I was referring to the manner in which so many posters are interacting.
If this was a more open discussion around helping each other, you all would have achieved the sound faster.
But instead it turns into a mud slinging competition.

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
not my fault. Ive been trying lkie hell to work on this sound. one might even say i have an unhealthy obsession with it. but i don't think you can find someone on these forums who has figured out more about how to make it at this point and if there is why haven't we heard from him? I'd like to talk about sound design but instead i'm attacked for having to much resonance or whatever with absolutely no positive support or ideas on how to work on the negative.
you think people would be interested in bettering themselves as opposed to putting others down to make there crap feel better

no one else in the world gives this much of a fuck about one sample
keep it to yourself for all i care
no one gives a fuck period unless you produce an actual tune anyway

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
hey guys this thread really sucks. ya'll so negative. yusomadd?
also i would like to say that growl basses are not invented by Skrillex so i hate when people say STOP RIDING SKRILLEX'S DICK MAKING GROWLS. growl basses are pretty cool and they have evolved to where they are through emulation and recreation; not by the genius of skrillex just sitting down one day and trying to make the smans bass with no basis for experimentation. lets keep this thread more possitive. we have a good community and lets work together on the progression of growl/neuro/midrange/dirty/vowely/filtered basses. my 2cents
anyway, almost all production noises are relatively simple concepts. the sounds that are super super complex are usually somewhat messy and unappealing from my humble production experience.
this is what we know.
1.) growls are created by fm. this is not the only way to make them but we know for a fact that growls can be made efficiently through fm.
2.) Growls use EQ modulation. this isnt a new concept and neurofunk guys have been doing it for years.
3.) there are effects on the growls. obviously so they dont sound like dry shit.
i think with these bits of knowledge we can start to get a solid formula for growly basses.
all of these basses on my page are created using this exact formula (harmonically rich fm synth sample + eq modulation with usually just 1 big spike + effects that i like. nothing usually too intense though besides reverb and distortion and shit). there are not very good and they are missing a lot of things but that's why we should work TOGETHER. idiots...

what i want to know is how to make a waveform in fm8 like the formant presets. it seems to me to be a sin wave with amplitude modulation? is it possible to modulate the amp of an operator with another operator instead of the frequency?
LETS GET BACK ON TOPIC AND MAKE SOME SOUNDS PEOPLE

Nice sound @hookjunior
I think this thread should be open for all approaches and "growl" sounds. i kinda prefer Knife Party's sounds myself but there is room for tons of varieties.

got a quick couple questions if you dont care
did you use an instrument rack for the bass? or did you just automate your formant vowels on your equalizer? of course with filters and pitch bending to accommodate the modulations but I am also wondering what are your favorite effects to use on this specifically?
I tend to apply a sidechain compressor (short attack medium release with gentle threshold) on the midhigh to make it sound like its gliding across the track, with an external chorus (cutoff around 600hz roughly, 15 - 30 ms delay) and of course unison of 2 voices with 20-40% stereo pan (in fm8) It seems to create this heavy and wide growl imo but it lacks that sort of cinematic feel to it you have in that remix, is that possibly reverb? flanger?
thanks

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
so i looked over that bass and its actually a really simple patch. its just an instrument rack with 2 instances of fm8 1 for growl and 1 for sub bass. the growl is done by taking fm8 and automating the send about of a formant preset wave operator to a sine wave operator so you can route the amount of modulation one operator does on the other one with a macro knob. also on that same knob i put an eq so when the knob is all the way up the eq is spiking around an AAAAH noise ( i think its around like 100-300) with a nice big bandwidth. on the low side of the knob i made it so it hits the OOOOOH sound (like in gOOse. not like in nO =P). now the bass has lots of movement on one knob which is cool. if you want you can do just the EQ shifting and it sounds about the same. i personally just like lots of movement on my basses so it makes people gosick growl on dance in the dark dude, got me bumping my head

now to make it sounds epic and larger what i do to just about every sound in a song i make is create a send and just put a really wide highpassed reverb with a longish tail. that way i can make things sound really big and epic without destroying the mix.
i can film a tut for u guys if you want. its easier to show then to explain

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
how did you make your growl do the wobble? I use the lfo and modulator in the mod sec but it always sounds like ass. did you resample and cut?
a tutorial would be appreciated, entirely up to you though
I got the rest though, I'm gonna test it out thanks homie!

I'm more curious about the high pitched synths of yours, they sound nice, can you explain how you made them?hookjunior wrote:so i looked over that bass and its actually a really simple patch. its just an instrument rack with 2 instances of fm8 1 for growl and 1 for sub bass. the growl is done by taking fm8 and automating the send about of a formant preset wave operator to a sine wave operator so you can route the amount of modulation one operator does on the other one with a macro knob. also on that same knob i put an eq so when the knob is all the way up the eq is spiking around an AAAAH noise ( i think its around like 100-300) with a nice big bandwidth. on the low side of the knob i made it so it hits the OOOOOH sound (like in gOOse. not like in nO =P). now the bass has lots of movement on one knob which is cool. if you want you can do just the EQ shifting and it sounds about the same. i personally just like lots of movement on my basses so it makes people gosick growl on dance in the dark dude, got me bumping my head

thanks. as for effects there is only saturation and a vocoder with -5 on the formant with like 2/3rds dry/wet. its a really simple sound. the key to making it sounds human is pitchbending and automating vowels at the same time ya dig?
