The one that caught my attention was the ones in the dance in the dark remix, think it's around the 1 min mark they start.
its been a while since i made those sounds but its a sound i made a lot. its basically just a square wave in massive with an envelope pitchbending the waveform from 2 octaves down reletively fast. reverb and eq and all. its reall easy to make though

ok... now i'm really starting to get closer. this is like my fifth try.
this is a lot harder than you think. one of the tricks is getting crazy filtering sounds without corrupt the quality of the sound.
Not bad but there's waaaay too much high end in there. Try to bring out the mids a bit and dampen some of the highs. It's fatiguing on the ears immediately after it starts. The general direction of the sound isn't that far off though.

Yeah That was a problem in trying to make the sound. I could just brickwall Lowpass all those highs out but then I felt you would lose all the talking elements of the sound (which I was getting more and more pronounced). The thing is that when you use all the filters and effects to get the movement of the sound yuo wind up building up all these crazy resonances that natural distort and sound like nothing and everything at once.
So you could either do it that way and then just chop all the highs off the top but then I feel it sound too muted and muddled. I think there must be a more clean way of achieving the top end movement with out it feeding back and distorting and resonating etc..
Btw, I used a recorded sound of me going (ayyyee rooarrr wahhhh) to vocode the patch I made the other day and it sounds promisingly closer to SMNS. I really wonder sometimes if its a vocoder. Because in First of the Year in the second drop the bass sound is DEFINITELY saying "Boooow youuuur Heeeaddd"

This is the closest I could get but it's no SMNS. Reminds me of the Sexy Lady Remix basses. I can't figure out the processing on the highs. Tried every type in Ohmicide and Ableton Redux and/or Erosion plug ins. Even the low/mids need to be deeper.
This is FM8, one Sine wave, one voice, a very long effects chain, pitch bending and parallel processing. I was getting some interesting results by making x2 or x4 longer bars of midi and drawing in pitch bends with the draw tool every 1/16th, bouncing to audio and then halving the tempo of the clip once or twice, which mimics inflection of voice. The 4 samples before the last one in the waveform were this method. Soundcloud

hey guys. so ive been experimenting in fm8. i think that growls are made 90% in fm 10% in fx. kinda like a reese i think you will here the growl before adding fx. ive gotten some coool results with only fm8 and 1 eq. ill ppost them up soon. peace brethrend
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
It's used during all "melody" parts. I've been trying to produce a similiar bass/pad using frequency splitting, SF, Ohmicide, different distortion plugs, Massive etc and w/e but I really can't even get close to that fat sounding distortion. The solution is probably resample some crazy reese but I seriously have no idea where to start. It doesn't have to sound like his pad/bass thing but I just want to know how to make that insanley fat distorted pad/bass.
And what'd you call it? Pad? Bass? Is it a bass and pad combined? I don't know.

Id you want to have your tunes sound like skrillex production quality-wise you're going to have to get the best mixing and mastering engineers in EDM. If, like the rest of us, you aren't rich off your ass then you should learn to mix as well as you can.

I don't know who you are answering to but you have a good point but I think everyone tries to mix as well as they can?

My point is your sounds are never going to be as good as skrillex's because they are professionally mixed and mastered.

The point of this thread is the timbre of a sound and not about whether said sound was mastered correctly.
If Skrillex wasn't mentioned in the title and it was about a certain type of midrange then there would be far less counter-productive bickering.
