or you could do it like that :D

but....that way it has no effect on the redrums step sequencer only the piano roll
exactly, but i think you'll step away from the sequencer one day or the other. Piano roll gives you so much more freedom.

Sequencer sucks - piano roll rules! :P

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

what more freedom about from vel/pan can the piano roll give you when working with the Redrum?

Easy switching of the snap grid, alternating between different hats without having to press the "select" button all the time, setting the start of the playback to where ever you want instead of at the start of the pattern, ...

And i believe velocity is the most important of all, so that should be taken into consideration. Also, the normal velocity in the step sequencer is 70, and if you later want to add something in the piano roll, the new note will be 100 velocity. I can probably think of more reason but yeah. i abandoned reason and went to kong anyway. Kong is awesome.

At this point I don't even use kong or redrum... Just use wavs in the sequencer gives me more control imo

So using wavs how would you like to quickly put down some open/close hi hat patterns like I mentioned earlier?

You would need to chop them up wouldnt you? nightmare if ur just messing around and changing the hi hat pattern non stop till its right I would assume

It's reall not that big of a deal cuz I reall don't pay much attention to exact detail... Doing so adds some swing the pattern.....now that I think about, what I like to do is find a break and match up my kicks and snares and hats to it but using different samples, the making variations from that takes a while but reall rewarding

What about a high pass filter in Reason 4? the small filter has a bp setting but I cannot get it to work like a high pass filter without opening the resonance?!

Iv heard people often have the Tape Distortion (speed at 5 o clock / compression at 7 o clock) on their master in Reason to try and remove the digital sound.

Anyone else do this or have any comments on it?

BP is a different thing than a HP man. There is no HP on the little filter. You can use a stereo imager, or route it through a thor.

About that tape compression thingy. The tape mode tried to emulate that old analog sound we all crave for. It can be really useful to give it that extra warmth. Maybe on the master is a little harsh though. Unless you use it as an aux effect.

Yeh I know the band pass is different but in other Daws I can often get a BP to work like a HP filter. How do you use a stereo imager to make a high pass filter?!

Thor, good idea!

I dont know about this Tape Distortion thing. I can often never hear any change until it just sounds overdone :) my monitors suck.

I'm gonna give this a go tonight actually! sounds interesting.

why if you can't hear the difference why not download a spectrum analyser and see if you can see the difference between two of the same track, one with the tape dist / one without

Well the idea is to warm up the sound. If I cannot hear that what's the point?

It works alright on a drum bus in reason but I think it's just the compressor doing the work.

You can put the stereo imager on "solo high band" mode, and then it will only let the frequencies above the X-over point pass.

And if it sounds overdone, try lowering the damage or raising the compression.

I use the Tape satuaration all the time but on individual elements not accross a whole mix. And even if i did i would only do it from the very start. That way you are mixing into it and adjust your eq/compression accordingly and not just slapping it on after which can really mess with your mix.

As for the high pass filter, like someone said use thor, plumb your signal into the back and use the matrix to route it into filter 3's left and right inputs. :W:
