Ficticious wrote:@Jetpack: Love your song and the beat, but I feel it's a little repetitive at times. You lost me around 1:37 but I started to get drawn back in when the ill came back in at the change up, maybe add in something small there or shorten it slightly so it's less of the same loops.
@Smore's Cool tune, I'm actually having the same problem as you are intro troubles as they are the hardest.... try starting really strong and dropping it out right away, then ease us into the beat again.
@VirusTI: It's got a great start but I feel it's lacking in a little bit of energy. Maybe try beefing it up at parts that seem too drowned-out. I do like a good relaxing tune but I feel there's no meat to it, just simply Air.
Constructive criticism is what I'm looking for. I'm only a couple months in so don't expect anything super special. I'm looking for ideas, or better samples pass me times that sounded off or weird. I'm sort of a housey/trance/Bass'y kinda guy.
Nevermind success on Embedding.

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree with you. As I finish the song, more parts will break the monotony.
Your WIP: Great for being a couple months in. Keep exploring and experimenting, you'll start to grasp everything. Try building an intro without the full kick right off the bat. Look for a better main snare sample, or bring the levels up on it. And try using some pads sidechained to the kick to fill some more frequencies.

Finally some constructive criticism! So very happy for this.
Which type of pads side-chained? Ambient or the strong ones I know it's up to me but I am not really sure what will flow well. suppose I'll experiment there. I do know about sidechain so I'll experiment with that some more, I know my tune is a little lacking in those areas and agree whole hearted. Is there a way to tell what a good snare sample sounds like vs not so good? If so I'll use the search bar if ya can point me in the right direction.

Take a good harmonically rich pad and sidechain it with a big duck to create a large rhythmic ducking effect.

@ differnce i like your percussion bro, nice congas, sub bass is nice and phat, the mid range is a bit boring and unoriginal, try getting some nice thick atmosphere in the back ground, few more effects, keep at it though bro, digging it, love the cow bell type sound that comes in later on,
@ Vader love the dnb break intro, nice tight production, I'm not really into this sorta style, but i bet it would go off on the dance floor, bass sounds are a bit generic, but all the sound affects are tops, love that low key vocal stabs man, big tune
@ Fictiscoius you are new to production man, keep hitting away at it bro, try harness your creativity before you start to focus to much on the technical side of things, if that makes any sense? as for you tune, i get the vibe you are going for, have a good read up on EQing and compression, what DAW you on?
Heres the tune we are working on, keen for any feedback

My first ever go at swing / nu skool breaks (sorry it's not dubstep!). Please tell me what needs to be added / changed to more it more complete. Cheers.
Soundcloud
Ficticious - Kick is BIG, which is nice, but could probably use some compression. Now the other elements are coming in, yes you need to compress that kick quite a bit. I like the high pitch synth that comes in at 45 seconds and the synth at 1min 04. A lot of nice elements to this track but it doesn't seem to really have a direction.. There needs to be more of a "feature" in my opnion..
darkdubz - Very nice atmosphere in the intro and that snare hit sounds good.. Clap is nice and light too. Very good intro, vocal sample before the drop is nice and the bassweight is naaaasty. Good job mate
Vader340mk2 - That break needs a lot more high end... Oh wait, or was it low passed on purpose!? Judging by the production on the drop I'd say yes.. Very intense build up, pretty effective. I don't know if you are leaving all mixing for the end of the tune but the synths & bass can definitely use a fair smattering of compression. Good basis though!
SMOR3S - I love the dreaminess of your track! Beat is very nice too.. Good crisp snare/clap. I think the beat could be a little less up front in the mix as I like the synth so much. I really like the vocal in the drop - goes with the tune very well. I think maybe there are a few too many reversals in there but it sounds very good so I don't think that's a complaint - more an observation! Good job!

@Smore's Cool tune, I'm actually having the same problem as you are intro troubles as they are the hardest.... try starting really strong and dropping it out right away, then ease us into the beat again.
I might sub the intro, so the levels match, or have a break down section after the subed intro... Idk really what to called my style of music, but I love how I make, what I make... And that should be for everyone else.. God there is a lot of great talent, on this forum :3[/u][/b]
SMOR3S - I love the dreaminess of your track! Beat is very nice too.. Good crisp snare/clap. I think the beat could be a little less up front in the mix as I like the synth so much. I love that emotional, spiritual feel.. In a sense, feel good music.. Whether your happy, sad, angry, w/e, I want people to just feel the beat, and enjoy what they hear...
I need to go back into the lead bassline, and pick, and choose, what vocals, are there, at what time, cause I have reversed vocals under normal, in some parts...
I can't thank you guys enough, for your feedback.. You honestly don't even know, what it makes me feel like.. <3

@ascian feel everything but the screech parts personaly i would drop with the chopped vocals right away tune is really nice without the screeches tbh so yeah maybe finish that one and make a non screechy vip haha the rest sounds fine to me
@darkdubz hm really nice so i could say just some things i would like as a listener maybe try to make some of the on top hihats a bit more organic with some harshness cutting with maybe dif reverb or some more tube white noise or sth like that
@ficticious try to find the spot which makes the basdrum warmer cant tell the exact spot but go with a nothc through it and maybe compress afterwards a tiny bit, like the melodie at 1 12, hm yeah just finish this one as good as you can and move on and come back to it with your gathered knowledge so you can improve it further
ok older tune i work on again some transitions are abrupt but i feel the vibe overall

@Ficticious: Love the break down @ 1:04, and the other section at 1:41, those parts have mad potential for a sick build up, into a filthy drop!
@darkdubz: Like Ascian said.. Good atmosphere.. Any atmospheric music, makes me want to snap my fingers, and dance :3
@Ascian: What isn't there to love about this!
BudSpencertron: Loving the wet sounding synth, and orchestra like hits :3, and damn those snares pop, Gehe! ^__^..
Here is another WIP update, of the same track I am working on... I just feel the intro lacks that punch, that the bassline delivers... Would you recommend subing the intro a bit, to give it some fillin, right when the kicks come in? I don't think there is to many layers either.. How do the snaps sound? I actually recorded, my friend, snapping his fingers, cause I suck at it :3.. I added side chain to the cello, and orchestra hits, as well as the snaps, and bells.. How does the build up sound now, and the little 4 snap at the beginning?
Soundcloud
The buildup is driving me crazy though, cause, I just don't feel it fits right, idk... Maybe I am over thinking this... ^__^ Like usual... gehe!

Haven't posted here in a while, figured I'd drop in and give out some feedback:
@
SMOR3S: Sounding okay on the intro, I think the notes sound a little truncated, perhaps try some subtle pitch bends every 4/8 notes. The panned snaps (although they sound nicely recorded) are a little too loud, tone them down a little and maybe filter stuff in/out to keep the intro flowing. The kick build up is too generic, imo I'd do the final build without the kick - maybe roll a snare/clap instead? Main body is sounding good although the sub is too loud to me and you lose a bit of the snare & kick, try and tone that down a little too.
@
BudSpencertron: Nice vibes. The track sounds a little empty in places though, perhaps a rolling, wide stereo pad in the background would help fill out some low level noise just to beef out the track a little. The perc sounds good, mix is sounding quite clean. The bass sounds really nice too. Not sure really what else to suggest.
@
Ascian: Boy oh boy. This is funky, I love the intro. I need a 320 of this when it's done man

Only criticisms from me are on the screeches, they seem too mono making the whole track seem a little flat - try spreading your synths out in the stereo field, maybe even pan some stabs left>right>left in time with the beat? Finish this up!!
@
darkdubz: Nice ambience, the perc is tight too. Builds nicely too the drop, the vocals work nicely too. The bass and perc are stiing nicely, and theres a good amount of padding. Not really sure what to suggest except for maybe adding some higher harmonics to the bass via a layered saw wave?
My latest track (slightly old now though) if anyone want's to listen & rate, I've made a fair few changes to this version though I'd still like some inputs on the second "drop"

Thanks for all the tips guys! I'm going to try them all out, always looking to better myself so I can make music I like and music that other people may enjoy as well. It's really fun haha. -saves in a notepad. I look forward to your guys finished tunes. I'll come back to give whatever criticism I can later

Here's my replies to your criticism~
@ascian. I agree that my tune is still lacking a slight sense of direction.
@electric headz - I'll try that during the beginning with the bass once I get it squared away what I actually want to accomplish
@smor - Filthy fits this tune for sure. it's one of my leading back synths in the song so that's actually a good idea. I was contemplating if I should do that or not.
@darkdubz. I'm on the DAW Fruity loops. It's what I started with and I find it easy. I have read up on other DAW's but this one is what fits me best, though I do like some of ableton's special ability's. I'm going to stick with FL until I learn it through and through
@bud Yeah I keep reading on EQ, maybe I need a better EQ'er for my eyes than settling for EQUO. Compression for punch of the kick would also be a good addition.

@mthrfnk: You killed this beat bro /), that's some House music, at it's finest ^__^.... I could honestly, see this in a video game, or movie!
@Ficticious: Like I said before, I am a House guy, but It would be awesome to make some filthy shit like that /).. I have two dubstep tracks I am working on, but they are on hold, till I find someone to collab with.. "Dubstep With Derpy" is going on my EP, so I need to find someone to work with me, on that one, fast, and "Sup Bishes", is a track I am making, in honor of my friend... He's a competitive gamer :3
I too was a FL Studio user, until I saw the power Ableton offered.. Not saying FL is bad, but I feel Ableton offers a lot more, if you take the time to learn the DAW...

@mthrfnk - Sick intro haha, loving the whole vibe of this song, I like your style, everything sounds very well produced, not sure what else to say!
@Budspencertron - Not much of a fan of the intro to this and the other synths coming in sound a bit overly distort and without much shine to 'em, almost sounds like you've cut off the highs? At around 1min when that synth kicks in, but then that weird muddy bassline comes in and ruins it, same again at around 1:30
@Ascian - Loving the funky vibe of this, those vocal samples work really well as does the saxophone, when the drums kick in it sounds really good man! Those drums fit really well! The brostep part needs more reference to the rest of the song, sounds a little out of place here, liking it when the piano / vocals / brostep all clashes after the first drop though!
This is my current WIP, not made dubstep in a while thought I would try again. It's not finished yet both composition and production wise, so bear that in mind. Lemme know what you think, otherwise.

Sup you dirty bitches!
Here's one I'm working on at the moment. I'll be taking it down in a day or two as its a semi-official kind of thing (first one actually ha) but I wanna make sure I do a good job. The vocals were a pain and slightly flat so I've been playing with Waves tune to get it right without making it sound like T-Pain. Also, this is my first time mixing an actually vocal line so would love feedback. The original is a jungle track out soon so I've only taken a couple of parts from the original and changed the key, tempo and pretty much all the instrumentation.
Soundcloud
Here's some feedback from tracks above.
ascian
nice intro, great samples. where did you get the horn from? drums are great, especially like kick. really full. When it drops I think at times the bass is a little quick (1/16?). Maybe add in some 1/4 and 1.8 parts. Possible reference the horn every 8 or 16 bars. I like when the vocals come in and how the bass takes a back seat to them. Sounding tidy tho bro.
BudSpencertron
such a weird tune ha! it feels a little dry to begin with and without the hats the beat feels a little disjointed. maybe get a little shuffle really low in the mix to just bind the quiet parts together. loving the bass tho. BIG.
mthrfnk
really like the plucks when they come in and the chords sequence is great. nice kick sample. its repetitive as hell tho. perhaps trying bringing in some other lead parts / melodies or some breaks / minibreaks.
VirusTI
really like the sidechaining when it kicks in. maybe drop the sub down a couple of db tho as its ever so slightly over powering. when the midrange part drops in it sounds as tho its a little overcompressed and has lost some of its low end because of this.
darkdubz
this is big. love the intro and the weight is tasty! don't reeally have much in the way of criticism here. big big stuff!

@Ascian: I really like the track. The intro is funny and catchy. The brostep drop should definitally have some horn in it. Just to bring the intro and the drop together a little. Thre drums are sounding nice and tight. needs more sub under the drop. now your metal step is sick and nasty. I want more of that.
@Burgeamon: Im feeling this one. That main wobble is really nice and crisp. The intro sounds like its going to drop into a Trap style song haha. That super saw you use in the intro is HUGE.
@mthrfnk: I love the strings intro. I usually try and incorporate strings into my songs. The progressive sound that comes in is perfect and I love the way it builds the track. I love progressive house and I think you did a damn good job with it. I would love to get a download of this when it is done so I can bump this in my car on my way to work .Only criticisms would be try and bring that kick out a little bit more. Just a little more punch. And add another element. Like in strobe by deadmou5 he has an organ sound that comes in. Your track needs something like that to just add a little more something to it. Love the track man.
So I just got monitors and after producing strictly on headphones it is like night and day. The drop is temporary until I can figure out something else. Let me know what you guys think!

@Ficticious
I liked it at first, honestly. But personally I do not like that synth that comes in at 0.45 at all. I think that the melody could work, but the synth is just...ugh-sounding to me. I do like break at 1.05, but I feel like you should bring the kick in at 1.05, instead of waiting a bar. Then that...complete change. Sounds like you tried to put two projects in one.
@darkdubz
Your name holds up! A dark dubby vibe indeed, hahaha. I like this a lot. Outstanding job. The sub bassline is ridiculous! Can't think of anything that needs to be improved.. Definitely needs to be longer!
@Ascian
I was really feeling the swing, I don't like the drop though. But I do like the second section after the drop with the bubbly synth. Excellent job, for the drop though, I say you should take out the one that screams, it sounds too detuned for a swing track in my opinion.
@Burgeamon
I love this! Please, please, please PM me a 320 when you finish this! The main wobble synth is amazing, especially in the way it kind of "studders".
After about a month hiatus (computer died) I finally got a desktop that wont clip when I add more than 3 synths
Instead of making the same crap I made with that computer, I'm going to be trying all sorts of shit now.

Here's sort of a glitch-hop attempt by me. I'm not sure if I want to finish it because I don't think that the drop was full enough to stand alone... If anyone wants to take over, and call it a collab, feel free to pm me ^_^. But for now, I'd like to hear from you guys to see if it's even worth finishing aha. Thanks in advance!
