It's used during all "melody" parts. I've been trying to produce a similiar bass/pad using frequency splitting, SF, Ohmicide, different distortion plugs, Massive etc and w/e but I really can't even get close to that fat sounding distortion. The solution is probably resample some crazy reese but I seriously have no idea where to start. It doesn't have to sound like his pad/bass thing but I just want to know how to make that insanley fat distorted pad/bass.
And what'd you call it? Pad? Bass? Is it a bass and pad combined? I don't know.
Yeah its 2 or 3 layers. My best guess is some low hoovery sound on top of a pretty straightforward bass. I was recreating the track a while ago for fun and I think thats what I ended up with.

If, like the rest of us, you aren't rich off your ass then you should learn to mix as well as you can.
I don't know who you are answering to but you have a good point but I think everyone tries to mix as well as they can?
My point is your sounds are never going to be as good as skrillex's because they are professionally mixed and mastered.
Skrillex mixes himself - one of the reasons his tracks sound good is the fact that he's nailed the mix on every one, the tracks are professionally mastered though.

To much bitching back and forth in this thread. Mastering? Come on, go more offtopic please... if people focused on discussing the sound rather than bickering about "erhmagerd squirrellex ruined derbsterp!!!1!", this thread would be worthwhile reading.
Even if Skrillex said that he uses FM8, isn't there a possibility that there's a little bit more to it than just FM synthesis? Think outside the box maaaaaaaaan...

I have been trying to find a certain sound for this dubstep track I am working on, but all the sounds I have tried to make just sound really flat, even with EQ, Reverb etc....
Don't flame me, but I am trying to get a nice, squeeky, high lead synth... kind of like Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites...
Or even something like the opening synth here...

On the track you posted it's sounds like pretty standard keys or plucks from house/trance style stuff.
For more weight try this: Layer 2 synths or synth and piano - play with square and saw based patches, use an exciter potentially, compress, reverb on a send, ping pong delay on a send.
Also SMANS has a sub underneath and a load of white noise and hats, hence making the track sound fuller and "more professional" - if the lead was by itself it would sound like a fucking C64.
Edit: without trying to sound like I'm shamelessly promoting my track - listen to my first WIP in my signature, if you like the sound of any of my intro/lead synths I can help you make them

Ya, I have been trying to get a nice saw sound, but all the patches I make sound really flat, even with the hats, and other things to fill it in...

Ham vst and Dubturbo should fix everything. Nothing will be flat if you use the two right.

Regarding the synth in SMANS, I'm pretty sure what gives it that squaky almost screamy sound is a fast lfo on the (saw) oscillator pitch. Set it to an tone/semitone or so and crank up the rate until you don't hear the LFO, just a grittier sound. Also the general stuff, try turning Restart Via Gate on and off (can alter the sound a lot with some waveforms and polyphony), increase the amount of voices, try some pitch cutoff etc. Throw on a chorus, always helps.
Also, the dimension is expander is sick for quickly increasing the size of your synth. Use with moderation though.
Edit: I went and did the work for ya real quick. Not saying this sounds super good because I whipped it up really quick, but you'll get the general idea. And like others said, some other sounds around it like noise and percussion will make it sound 10x better.
BTW, and this is completely off topic, but mthrfnk, do make sure to finish a track. A lot of your WIP stuff sounds great, I wanna hear a full track!

if what i'm thinking about is what you're trying to accomplish...
then super saw CHORDS. you need a few detuned saws (+/- 50 cents). and chords. chords are what make it sound less 'flat.'
then side chain that shit.

Instead of playing one note, play 3 and turn the 2 lowest velocity down a but so it just puts emphasis on the high note. Could even pan them slightly to give a fuller sound. Try and let me know if it works. Just use a house/trance pluck. Can find some good presets in Zeta+, Nexus, Vangaurd, and maybe Massive.

if you want a lead synth like scary monster n nice sprites you need atleast some saw's n stuff, foldback distorion and maybe chorus effect, as far as i discovered, but the big secret is in the foldback distortion.

And instead of making a thread or two everyday about how to make a synth or bass, post in the "How To Make This Sound" thread.
