completely forgot this came out on dvd as well. dirt cheap so will be a standard purchase. never seen it in japanese either. boh
Venus Wars! I knew there was one more in the montage i was missin out.
and in answer to the question about sub vs dub, subs win everytime (although having said that cowboy bebop does have good english voice acting). it's not just that english dubs sound very wooden but also that the japanese voice acting can often be of a really high standard, probably an effect of japan having such an enormous market/pool of voice actors to hire from. also sub quality is of major importance to me, i will always search for the highest quality fansubs before embarking on a new series. can recommend some good 'seal of quality' fansubbers if anyone's interested.

Big! That was really my first one too. Well, actually I think Akira was the first anime I watched, but I was too confused to decide whether I liked it or not. Project A-ko was much easier to follow.

gotta love the name's of the characters as well, a-ko, b-ko and c-ko.
the day when a-ko turns up to school and there's a 50ft mecha waiting to offer her out stands out as one of my all time fave anime moments.

On the sub/dub thing..
I think it depends on whats the film/show.
I have both Akira on dubbed and subbed and I must say I prefer the dubbed.
Same goes for Ghost In The Shell, i'm like half and half with studio gibley films..Some are better dubbed some are better subbed.
Although when it comes to shows, the dubbing is usually reallllllllly bad due to its just quickly done for the western market.
Also!!!
Fist Of The Northstar!!!!
What a farking film, did anyone ever see the live action!?! Its well jokes, the Anime is much better though..

Sick, i have this lined up to watch after i finish Mushishi, can't wait.
Oh, i forgot to say, people, MUSHISHI!!! It's the one.
It's the most dreamlike and philosophical anime i've ever seen. Each episode leaves a calm and relaxed feeling. If there was a meditational anime this is it.
Mushi aren't plants or animals, but the closest thing to life and nature there is. They take many forms, from liquid to bacteria to plants. A mushishi is a person who gathers lore on them and learns about their many forms and how to interact with them. Each stand alone episode follows a mushishi called Ginko as he travels around, encountering people whose lives are affected by the mushi and helping them to understand their habits.
It's really hard to describe what makes it so good but if you can appreciate a series that moves at a slow and gentle pace then it's definitely worth checking out. There's no character development, just good stories which have an almost fable like quality.

Felt to dig up this thread cause im looking to get some anime over the weekend

Akira... Bleach eps.. Urotsukudoji .. Fist of the North Star..
Im looking for something along the lines of Urot & Akira.. raw blood/guts action with sexual content.
Gorier / sicker the better

Comparitively tame to a lot of the other stuff mentioned in this thread, but anyone seen "Paprika"? The dream sequences are awesomely done.

perfect blue and kite are films, Gantz is a series.
If you want some real batshit anime watch FLCL (6 eps i think) - not violent etc but very funny.
The Blood+ series looks good - got some of it dl/d
