I should've made it more clear, but that was a reply to Hackman.

I suppose you could say that violence is more institutionalized now. Ideologically we as a people are more conditioned to accept violence only in pre-determined cases and to actively endorse its acceptable contexts. The law outlines the extent to which an individual has the right (permission) to use physical force. The hardcore violence is monopolized by the heads with helmets ;)
More or less this.

i think there's two separate arguments going on here.... that fight on the bus was clearly not the way to go about settling differences, although i have to say the young guy deserved it. but organised fights like martial arts are a sport and nothing else. i can't say i'd ever want to get involved but they don't exist to settle differences, they exist for the enjoyment/challenge of those involved, and maybe their audience too

barehanded boxing was actually safer though. people couldn't hit each other so hard so damage was actually less. there were more cuts and bruises perhaps but people weren't giving each other brain damage. and public executions still happen all over the world

well ok, maybe not "nothing else" but martial arts (in their proper setting) aren't really intended to be a way of solving disputes, and to be perfectly honest using martial arts when getting mugged would probably be contrary to the teachings of restraint and discipline that are central to them

yes

No. Defense of yourself and family is pretty much the only for them to be used in real life.

it depends how you were to use it i guess. you're unlikely to be at massive risk (other than your belongings) when getting mugged so restraint would be key

If someone pulls a weapon on me, they're getting incapacitated.
