Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
I just hate when the downloads far exceed the feedback. Yeah bleh bleh bleh "obviously your doing it right if they d/l' arguement... idc... Im greedy with my tunes, I made them for me not for you, and its a me first gimme gimme gimme sorta situation if you want copies of them. I have tunes I make with you, listeners, being the ones in mind. BUt for the most part lately I feel like my tunes are very off, and like thier something other people wont totally get. Fuels my downloads not available kick.
Bandcamps nice, because I can at least get emails off people who are downloading...
For the most part what Im on about, is thier mine, I made them, with myself in mind, so gimme gimme gimme feedback, or im not gonna give ya give ya give ya 230s. Greedy as it mgiht be. How I see it.

c- then it's a WIP not a track, i reckon there is a difference.
d- no it's your track and you can do whatever you want with it, it's just i think it's counter-productive.

on which point? don't get how the unreleased dubs prove/disprove anything?deadly habit wrote:i'd beg to differ and their is loads of threads about omg x artist unreleased dubs that will prove it and guess what not all of them will ever see release
like i said, personally i think it's counter-productive cos i make music to share and think there is little point being over-precious about things especially in this day+age, doesn't mean i think Basic A's opinion is invalid or that there is any case to prove.

it's nice to have tunes that are your own for dj sets and such. without some exclusive bits any dick or jane can play the same set as you.

agreed. unreleased material and vips are a big reason to go see a dj live. i think a big part of djing culture is having access to tunes that the average person cant get.deadly habit wrote:it's nice to have tunes that are your own for dj sets and such. without some exclusive bits any dick or jane can play the same set as you.

Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
Only release offers Ive ever had oppurtunity to deny, have come after tunes were in public ear. Do you think, if someone had asked what material I had and I said 'well, Ive made everything available for download on soundcloud, but I have these w.i.p.s set as private, and I can maybe make you something??? Also, please note, that although I have made them available for download, I have fuck shit clue who my market is, because Ive been blindly distributing files, so you cant even suggest I contact these fans to notify them Im releasing stuff!'symmetricalsounds wrote:i think it's counter-productive.
Nah. Everyone would have been like
And thatd have been the end of it.
Another thing, by stating on all my tunes 'If you want 320s, just ask!' Im making it very clear that they are available, however, Im assuring myself in multiple ways. On one hand, I will be able to see whos got my tunes... Ill be able to ask, if they have plans for them, maybe they dj, and Im about to be in a mix... wouldnt you like to be able to listen when you get used? And at the end of the day, some people blindly troll soundcloud, by saying to ask, obviously, you car enough to read my track decriptions, and you care enough to message me and ask. Thats worth, alot more to me, then a few digits in my download statistics.
Dont get me wrong, I release plenty of free downloads to the public on soundcloud n bandcamp, because you do want that random download name is on thier pc factor. but I dont think its time to stop holding back my tunes.
If nothing else.
i wanna mix them.

Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
if someone wants to release a tune they will do it regardless of whether it's up for free download on your SC or not. like i said before nothing wrong with holding back your tunes if that's what you want to do with them.

Who would release something when the market has it for free indiscriminately? I mean, if I was ahdning out 320s and takin names and gettin promo n whatnot, yeah... but do they really release whats already free??? Why would you ever pay for soemthing if it was free????

Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
well mp3/wavs floating around aren't the same as a vinyl release, plus people like radiohead/trent reznor/saul williams have already proved that they can release albums for free and still have people buy them.they may be bigger artists with plenty of fans but the point still stands that being able to download a track for free doesn't mean people wouldn't pay money for a cd/vinyl release.Basic A wrote:symmetricalsounds wrote:if someone wants to release a tune they will do it regardless of whether it's up for free download on your SC or not. like i said before nothing wrong with holding back your tunes if that's what you want to do with them.![]()

Producers have the right to do whatever they want with their tunes end of story. I don't give my tunes out to that many people and if you don't like it you can suck a fat dick

yea but look at the names you listed, they already have a living off music and can afford to do itsymmetricalsounds wrote:well mp3/wavs floating around aren't the same as a vinyl release, plus people like radiohead/trent reznor/saul williams have already proved that they can release albums for free and still have people buy them.they may be bigger artists with plenty of fans but the point still stands that being able to download a track for free doesn't mean people wouldn't pay money for a cd/vinyl release.Basic A wrote:symmetricalsounds wrote:if someone wants to release a tune they will do it regardless of whether it's up for free download on your SC or not. like i said before nothing wrong with holding back your tunes if that's what you want to do with them.![]()

shit i've given away how many free releases vs my commercial shit?
there comes a point when people need to stop feeling entitled to freebies and help support artists they dig

no doubt, but for me this isn't about people being entitled or anything like that. i don't think i'm owed a living but i reckon i've got more chance of one from music if my music is out there and i get regular gigs rather than being precious over holding onto tracks.deadly habit wrote: there comes a point when people need to stop feeling entitled to freebies and help support artists they dig

Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
what if the only way some people can show support is by playing their tune ?there comes a point when people need to stop feeling entitled to freebies and help support artists they dig
... i dont disagree but sometimes paying my mortgage is more important than buying tunes

given it's not a throwaway generic tune that has a few month shelflife it shouldn't make a difference when you get it
also directly contacting artists works time to time, especially for sold out vinyl only releases when you offer some $ rather then pirating it. they stand nothing to gain from some random selling a copy of their plate at 10-20x what it originally went for
Re: Dont sit on your tunes ....
Clearly I feel different to most folks here.
We give away our remixes all the time. Well, not "give"-- it may be monetarily free, but to get them, fans need to give us their email addresses-- we send out 2x/monthly mailers about gigs, releases, videos, etc. If people like them, great, it builds community. If not, you can opt out at any time, but community is a two way street; you should never be left with nothing after giving something away. Shit, if I give away 4 pairs of old shoes, i get back closet space, which is a big thing in NYC
Its one thing for the fun bootlegs we make to run for live gigs; it's another thing entirely for legit remixes. Balkan Beat Box's whole new record has remixes, and they're all available for free-- it helps to build everyone's fanbase.
I've never been one to broadcast-give-away my tunes, unless they've already been released/vinyl run's been sold out/mp3 sales are dead. Give a tune 2 years at the absolute max, and then it can be in the running for freebies. I will send promos to various DJ's who i know will help support my tunes, and i turn i'll gladly support their mixes, etc...
The things that we deal in-- music, dances, community-- it's a really big ecosystem of things. It's all based around songs, they're the currency, the lifeblood of all of this. They have an intrinsic value, and beyond a certain point I don't think simply giving out your music is benefical to anyone. If people want it, they'll find it (provided you show them how to get it).
